Too right! It seems to have more love from Britain than America, oddly, but probably due to that very reason.

Quality movies rarely get the love they deserve.
People would rather see Twilight and the like.

Heh.
Usually when a movie is underrated, I become more curious about it.

I had exactly the same thing with Southland Tales last year. It was getting panned and it sounded so damned interesting. It take a few viewings but once you get the story... Bloody brilliant. But not as re-watchable as good old Falling Down.

Ah I've never heard of that one. One of these underrated films I like is called Following. It's actually Christopher Nolan's first film.

Ah. One of the (many) films on my to see list....

citizen17 In reply to CarlPearce [2009-03-04 18:46:00 +0000 UTC]

But amidst them all, Falling Down of course remains a favorite.

Too right.

There's another one I like but all my friends hate, from the late 80's, called 'D.O.A.' starring Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. It's a remake of a 50's film noir and I personally think it's ace. Check it out if you ever get the chance.

Oh, and 'Collateral'. That Michael Mann film from a few years back starring Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise. Brilliant film, that. And, while we're on brilliant under-seen films, if you've never seen 'L.A. Confidential' then hang your head in shame and get buying / renting / downloading. Fan-friggin-tastic.

Haven't seen D.O.A. but if it's a film noir, that might be interesting.

I have Collateral. I love that film so much. It's great. And of course I've seen L.A. Confidential. It's a classic really.
You know what Spielberg film my friends don't get and look at me in awe when I mention it? Duel. With the truck and the car. It's his best I think.

Duel is ace. As is Empire of the Sun. Very underrated. Another good, underlooked movie is 'Cop Land' with Sly Stallone, Bob De Niro and Harvey Keitel. The only film other that First Blood and Rocky (1st) where the slurred one actually acts very well in a role.

Ah, Empire of the Sun. I have that too! Speaking of Christian Bale, have you seen Rescue Dawn? It was good. But it went practically ignored.
Cop Land eh? Haven't heard of that one. I'll have to google it or something.

Tis a FANTASTICO film! Haven't seen Rescue Dawn yet but it too is on my list. Didn't catch it at my local multi because they wanted to show some over commercial blockbuster shite on five screens at once as always...

citizen17 In reply to CarlPearce [2009-03-06 22:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Hahah yeah, I don't understand why that kind of movie need to be shown on so many screens. For crying out loud.
Rescue Dawn was so ignored it blows my mind.

CarlPearce In reply to citizen17 [2009-03-07 17:04:58 +0000 UTC]

There's a long sad history of fantastic movies being ignored for multiple showings of shite. I went to see Donnie Darko only to be told they'd canceled it at that cinema to show fucking Star Wars on an extra (5th!!!!!) screen. At 3pm. And the cinema was empty. I went to see Pan's Labyrinth only to be told they couldn't justify showing a foreign film over another screen of some other shite...

Mental.

Hah, oh, I hear you.
Same went of Der Untergang. There was only one cinema that had it, and they only kept it for like one week. Because it was too "foreign" I guess.
Read the darn subtitles is what I say.

Too bloody right. Pan's got rave reviews and there was Oscar talk so they thought, "hey, maybe we SHOULD show it?"

citizen17 In reply to CarlPearce [2009-03-08 18:27:57 +0000 UTC]

Hahha talk about waking up and smelling the roses.
To be honest, I don't give much weight to the Academy's picks.

Despite that, I end up watching it every year. Figure that out if you can.
Oh well. Foreign films, by the way, are generally very very interesting.

As long as they're easy to follow the text and the plot / visuals. I can't stand the ones where they speak so bloody fast that you have to keep stopping the dvd to read what they're motor mouthing out. I never watch the Oscars though...

Hahah yeah, I know what you mean. But when they are decently subtitled, it's a great experience.

blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah
