Description

This character sheet of Sally Acorn was based on a sketch I did for a friend who did not care for the Archie redesign made of her back in 2013. Considering that the design might be more appealing to him and other detractors if Sally seemed more reminiscent of her cartoon counterpart, I doodled an alteration of the redesign.

The key changes I made are as follows:

• Hair, face, and eyes are similar to the cartoon's proportions rather than the comic's version under Yardley.

• The body frame and hands are smaller and thinner than the comics larger proportions that were seemingly meant to mimic the SEGA style but often simply look bulky.

• Sally's boots have reverted back to the minimalist riding boot style.

• Nicole is latched onto Sally's boot as the classic handheld computer.

• Sally's wristbands and belt are golden yellow to denote that they have been forged out of power rings from the ring generator.

I decided that the core elements of Archie's redesign that would be retained in my rendition were the presence of gloves, a black shirt with white trim, a zipped-up vest, and black shorts with white trim.

Having finished the main figure, an issue occurred to me with the initial design of Sally in the 90s cartoon. Though certain episodes showed that certain animators understood what to do with Sally's face during transitional frames, many times her eyes and mouth would look very awkward when not in profile. When constructing Sally's face from a head-on view or abnormal angles, animators would have trouble displaying varied expressions. The four portraits of Sally on this character sheet are my attempts at proving that Sally could have solid facial expressions in my amalgamated design.

By the way, I decided to give Sally prominent front teeth unlike many of her previous iterations. Vaguely, I recall reading that Ben Hurst was uncertain what type of animal Sally was, and he believed that maybe she was a hybrid of a chipmunk, fox, squirrel, or some such foraging, woodland mammal. In her initial bio in 1991, Sally was a squirrel, but her cartoon persona in 1992 and 1993 has a small, chipmunk-like tail. By giving her chipmunk teeth to complement her chipmunk tail, I have clarified in my design that she must be a chipmunk. Still her racial identity is up for interpretation.

The final image on the bottom left was just an attempt to consolidate the Sonic SATAM version of Sally with the pilot episode version of her. The color scheme for her skin and eyes along with her boot design is pulled from the pilot episode of the 1993 animated series, but Sally's overall figure is intended to mimic her look in later episodes. Though the other figure and portraits were colored in an airbrush style, on a whim I thought this pink Sally should be colored in the cel shading style.

Sally Acorn and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are the intellectual property and of SEGA. This artwork was created by Carl Sumner Anderson III in 2019.
