Description

For quite some time, I have been a fan of Archie Comics lesser-known yet influential superheroes from the 1940s. I particularly enjoyed the artwork from the Zip Comics line that included such characters as Steel Sterling, Black Jack, Red Rube, and The Web. Those heroes are in this illustration, and all of the other enemies and people present are inspired by specific entities on Zip Comics covers. The Zip heroes finally get a chance to mingle and wrestle with various monsters.

Generally, my understanding of art markers was improving. The villains in the foreground especially show my advancement. However, I made this piece in a frenzy because I learned at the last minute that there was a comic-con art contest in my area. If my memory serves me, I created this piece in one night in a daze. Being in a hurry, the perspective and detail in line work suffered. Though the piece didn't turn out perfectly, I still believe simulating an immediate deadline and forcing myself to perform was a fine way to practice handling real-world limitations. However, through this experience, I learned that if I'm making artwork for personal reasons, I shouldn't be concerned with meeting outside deadlines.
