Love this! Entrance to hell, perhaps? I think it is great!

Thanks. I was working with famous poems on the subject of hell at the time and this was one of a number of illustrations that I produced to accompany the poems.

i don't know why - but I really like this - i like the emptyness...

Thanks. The empty space was used for a poem once upon a time, but I'm happy that it works as a blank space too.

great anatomy on skinless and the skulls, what is the horned skull of? buffalo? I also like the faces in the wall, I didnt even notice them at first. I think I might like them a little bit more if they protruded a bit.

Good point about having the faces protrude more ... I'll bear that in mind if I do something like this again. The skull of the horned buffalo is just my idea of Satan's flair for interior design. Thanks

Amusing thought that satan would putter around hell setting up the ambiance and decor.

Just a bit of advice, you can go back to the .png version and underneath it on the line of icons is one that has a pencil on paper and says Edit deviation on the bar above, and you can delete it through there so you don't have two versions of the same thing. I like this a lot! I think it's pretty spiffy without anything through the door. It looks like it's glowing so brightly in there you can't even see so it makes the viewer wonder what's through the gate to Hell.

Thank you - I will go and delete the earlier one. I did this drawing and a few others to illustrate a little anthology of poems on the subject of journeys to hell - this was influenced by Dante's 'Inferno'. The white space actually carried a translated poem.
Thanks again!

Sure, no problem. I had a heck of a time figuring out how to edit and delete and move things at first, but being an anime-influenced artist I had to learn really fast when they went exterminating anime out of the wrong categories. Ah well, at least that's over. Even if the reason was purely utilitarian I do like it with the white space, even more so than if there was brimstone or demons or Plato in there (after all it IS Dante and I had to read that for the same class as Beowulf because I had 3 semesters of it). The blank gives a sense of mystery and I think that works better than anything you might put inside. But such a small gate for so many people. Well, standing in line is its own hell anyway

I've deleted the earlier failed submission. Thanks for your advice. I suspose the small gate also makes it hard for anyone to leave once in. I'm impressed with your studies - not many British kids get to study Dante or Boewulf. In fact, Boewulf tends to only be studied in Oxford and Cambridge Universities. My University doesn't carry it.

Hm, British? Nah, I'm American, although in Japan right now studying Japanese. (I get around. ) Wow, Dante and Beowulf aren't studied? At my university you can't get around it, at least in the Honors College. It's required reading. The rest of the university might not have to but I understand some professors require it anyway.

Actually, Dante might be studied at some ... there was a module on Milton's 'Paradise Lost' for first years at my Uni - I didn't take up that module option. But as far as Boewulf goes, I gather only Oxbridge colleges offer it. I may be wrong though - it is quite a sweeping statement to make. All the best with your studies!

Thanks! I'm certainly trying my best...well, okay, right now it's summer break and I'm pretty tired, I completed two semesters at home and started in at Sapporo University without a break so I've been laying around like a lazy bum. And I'm waiting for my boyfriend to get here, he's studying in Tokyo right now but we're going to spend the summer together. His Japanese ability far exceeds mine so we're going to go out and speak as much Japanese as possible. I don't know enough to make that kind of plan work alone unfortunately so I can't make reservations, ask for help, etc. but he can so it should be a lot of fun.
I read some of Paradise Lost too What a piece. And all this talk about great classics is making me want to read them all but I should just go to bed, it's 2am in Japan right now.
Ah well, good night! Hope to talk to you again sometime, it was quite fun ^_^

Je parle aussi un peu de francais in fact I speak much more French than Japanese, I studied it 4 years in high school with an awesome teacher and only 2 in college and the faculty for my university's Japanese program is understaffed.
But anyway. Goodnight! Er, day. You know, whatever time it is there.

It's 18:20 hrs, or 6:20pm ... I've forgotten most of the French I learnt in school [I was kicked out of the class - thanks to my sister and a case of mistaken identity] ... anyway, you need your sleep and it's time I thought about food. Hope to chat to you again sometime. Oh, by the way, I'm a mature student and it's been a while since I was in High School. I did four years in Art School and I'm now at uni studying English Lit and Creative writing.
Pleasant dreams!

The 'white nothing' is room for a poem.
Not a deep response!
