Description
*Note - I'm in the progress of moving WIP to scraps. As this work achieves an element of looking final, I'd like it to remain in my gallery.I'm not even halfway done on this one as I wish to do another line of figures descending on the left, and to start working on a background too.
The theme is Persephone's descent into Hades. I'm toying with a number of ideas on this, whether to show a change in seasons through fallen leaves, etc., or to just keep the background simple with a hint of steps. Another idea of mine is to have the steps formed from roots of trees, etc., rather than have them appear man-made - I'm undecided on that one. The violinists are supposed to be playing a symphony for Persephone. I like the words 'symphony' and "Persephone" together, but thought "A Symphony for Persephone" would be too grand a title!
The inspiration for this is Burne-Jones's work showing women descending stairs.
All the figures are based on photos by

There is a really nice movement here that is a bit over shadowed in the final drawing, nice work and a major effort.

Thank you. I totally appreciate what you've said and I'm glad I photographed the drawing at this point and felt it had a lot going for it in its own right. I think completing it to the level I have in the finished piece was more of an endurance test or some sort of masochistic challenge to just keep going.

It's very good to push a work as far as you can and still maintain control, I do it with paintings all the time but paint them out again till they are right, it's harder with drawings. I know exactly what you are saying with endurance test, it's your desire to create a masterpiece. Keep trying, you will one day.

there is something SO cool about this. it has a real sense of motion about it, and everything flows together beautifully. at the same time, it's somewhat eerie... and i don't know how to explain why.

Thank you. The Pre-Raphaelite reference is a great compliment. I'm getting nearer to completing the drawing and trying not to rush things too much ... it's been many months in the making

Ooohhh. I really really like this. I'm tempted to say just leave it. But I really like your root type of steps idea. You do suck lovely windy roots and it could mirror the hair. And you could easily sneak some fallen leaves in there as well just subtly. I don't know if I'd like to see a hint more drapery on persephone to underscore her, so she looks less like standard so pretty she's not going to make it through the movie horror flick chick. (Though come to think of it, in a way I guess that's what she was...I really feel guilty for not finishing my story on her now. )
So, what type of entourage would Orpheus get?

CaroleHumphreys In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2007-11-22 00:37:14 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the feedback. I like the idea of adding a bit more drapery to Persephone that's certainly giving me some ideas - a trailing veil might help to show she has come down the steps. Hmm ... the dark bride of Hades for six months of each year, and the veil might pick up a few autumn leaves as well.
And as for Orpheus, good question. I think his entourage could be a mob of eager wannabe Eurydices trying to trick their way out of hell. He really should deserve a musical entourage, so how about some attendant lute players - all male and Adonis-like?

I can't believe some moron within the DA Administration consider this stunning piece unacceptable tio be in your gallery!!!!!!!!
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
CaroleHumphreys In reply to Boggleboy [2007-10-21 20:33:38 +0000 UTC]
That DA admin hasn't reached this little gem yet ... but it's only a matter of time, I guess. I deliberately posted this at a stage where I felt it had a sense of completeness and worked as a stand alone piece of art - but by DA's thinking, us artists aren't allowed to make that decision; if it's a piece that we will work on further, it has no right to be in our main gallery. I don't post many deviations in a year because of the time it takes to complete each piece and posting WIP allows me to stay in touch with my watchers. It feels as though I'll be denied a much valued part of my DA activity if I lose that.

sevenwillow In reply to CaroleHumphreys [2007-11-06 22:35:27 +0000 UTC]
leave out the WIP part and you should be ok. How the hell do they know a drawing isn't a finished drawing....there are those who use half finished half unfinished as a finished artwork. I do not believe it is up to DA to decide what is art and what is not. In fact, I think the ONLY one to decide that should be the artist who created it!!!!

I haven't been able to figure out how to drop a link to another site in here so...check out "Hill Fairies" by Edward Burne-Jones...really very different from this (did I mention it was beautiful? I should have)...one of a few paintings he did featuring descending figures...

Thank you for drawing my attention to Hill Fairies - I hadn't seen it before. (You can create links by copy/pasting the URL in the address bar) and this should be a link to that painting [link]
The painting which inspired me in my drawing was this one - The Golden Stairs [link]
