A while ago my Homugo Crew started to wonder if it’s physically possible for me to draw non-cuteness. I accepted the challenge, bc whaaat - OF COURSE I can draw non-cuteness, let’s not be silly. Ari decided on “do you permit it?” prompt and… Well.
Apparently it’s my curse. I’m like Midas, only all I touch turns to CUTE

Aaah, that sounds REALLY confusing! And I'm pretty sure it would still be confusing for me, even if I'd actually know French a bit more than I do now (which is almost nothing, I'm afraid, it's been YEARS since I had French classes and I was a stupid lil shit and I wasn't even paying attention, how I regret it now! I'd very much like to go back in time and smack my younger self upside the head... BUT I'm willing to start learning it again soon!

Yes it's confusing bc in that context you'd probably use "puis-je" ("may I") rather than the verb permettre that is not supposed to be used alone but with a relative complement, basically to say what he'd like him to allow. Here it makes it sound either grammatically weird, very familiar or ironic ( "tu permets ?" is often used as an ironic way to tell someone that you'd like them to stop interrupting you from doing your things, like "do you permit that I exist for a minute ?" XD)
I totally understand that, I used to be very bored in school and never listen because I was an arrogant idiot who thought she knew it all XD But tbh although I've studied two languages at school, most of what I learned came from other sources because language classes didn't teach me much... anyway, if you want to start learning french again I'd be glad to help you if you'd like !

Maybe that phrase had even more meanings in Hugo times? In Polish there's A LOT such cases. And I had no idea it can be used in such a ironic meaning nowadays, this is so interesting! I need to remember that

I think the ironic meaning already existed and I'm 100% sure Hugo did that on purpose because he was that kind of guy who chooses every single word and for such an important phrase he wouldn't have let anything to chance ... And you're totally right, I'm sure there were a billion of other meanings we don't get now, for instance it's also one of the formal phrases used to ask for someone's hand to dance in ealier periods but with tu instead of vous alkfjlkgfhj THIS IS SHIPPING GOLD
I've been told before that my english was a bit formal but if I was speaking the english I was taught at school it'd probably be even worse... Also idk how it is in Poland but he they only teach british english and not american, which is a bit strange sometimes

IT IS SHIPPING GOLD, YES! And I really wonder how is it possible that there are people who still claim that E/R isn't a canon thing... Btw, we have this shitty abridged translation of the Brick here, where they removed most of the important (and relevant to E/R relationship) fragments, like when you read the abridged version and you get to the Orestes Fasting Pylades Drunk part you actually wonder why such title (bc all the part about mythology parallels was removed, not like it's something important, nooo) and what's the big deal with R willing to die side by side all of a sudden - it's the worst, it changes the whole reception of the book! It made me really mad when I was checking through some parts, I was actually willing to write a longer rant about it, but I got distracted. Maybe next time, when I'll have some time to do a proper comparison of both translations.

We also have some abridged versions here but they're only made for schools because you can't study the whole brick in class, and the missing parts are replaced by explanation pages that sum up what was supposed to be there, give some historical elements and explain the character's dynamics to help the student to understand. Making an abridged version of a classic that wouldn't be aimed to middle school or high school pupils is something that almost never happens and when it does it's usually in old editions or cheap unimportant collections (or only in essays and philosophy). France is extremely protective toward literature and arts and cutting down such important parts in a main edition would be an outrage for most people. I could quote an academician from the Académie Française who said "if you guillotine Hugo you deserve to be guillotined too" about an edition of Notre Dame where loads of important part where missing XD
About translations, I'm often very surprised by the english versions. It is mostly because it's very strange to see something from your native language, something you've studied in french classes since primary school, translated in english but it's also because I often feel like the translations are a bit irrational and made to sound good more than to stick to the actual meaning. And of course it reduces the meaning of the words quite a lot. For instance, translating "je suis farouche" by "I am wild" really does not give the whole meaning because "farouche" does not qualify something really violent in an animal way like "wild" does, but has a double meaning : it can be both bravery, sternness and fierceness but also distrust and fearfulness of someone who is hard to reach and to convince. So here Grantaire is both being ironic AND very honest at the same time, this is so perfect it almost makes me cry, but english speaking people can't always get this....
(sorry for the long comment aha, I'm a bit over-enthousiastic I guess and I could go on about literary analysis and words/names meaning for hours... When I came for my lit pre-exam last year and got the Barrière du Maine scene in commentary I almost danced around the room aha)

The explanation pages make sense, at least - here it almost looks like they wanted to avoid queer interpretations? I'm pretty sure the abridged version was meant to be for school as well, but it was a long time ago, Les Mis aren't in out school canon for years (when I was in high school I tried to trick our teacher to do classes about it anyway, bc I had just read a book for the first time and I LOVED IT, but my colleagues were terrified of its ...brick sizes and made me stop

I think romanticist novels and poetry definitely are analysis material and they're probably the easiest thing to work on as as literature student because of all the symbolism and historical references! Hugo is one to the best for that. I'd be glad to share my little literary thoughts with you if you're interested, and maybe you could give me yours

Yes, I think so too, tho during my uni years I used to analyse mainly Polish works. But those are obviously FULL of symbolism and various references as well. Out little conversation made me feel like doing some research of Polish publications about Les Mis and Hugo in general, I think I should spare some time to it!

I read a bit of your article and it looks really interesting , I'm definitely going to read it more seriously when I have some time ! Bahorel is one those characters I never pay enough attention to and I definitely should start caring a lot more. I've been trying to figure out his name's meaning, which is quite difficult since I can't find anyone else in reality of fiction who ever wore such a name and it doesn't seem to mean anything. The closest I could find by sonority are old regional or slang words like "baholée" that is a dog's bark or howl, and "bahuter" that is slang for "make an awful deal of noise" XD (also both have the "bahut" root that is slang for high school/college so bahuter is probably linked with the mess and noise caused by troublemaking students, which makes me think that this could be a good reason for Hugo to choose it). The other amis are easier to figure out tbh XD Except maybe for Enjolras and Grantaire whose names have so much possible interpretations that it makes it hard to know which ones are true....

There are so much possibilities that I'm afraid my little personnal thoughts aren't very relevant ... I have southern regional "enjoura", which means "terrible" or "terrifying" (how incredible), germanic "Engel-ras", "advised by an angel" or "angel advisor", there obviously is "enjôleras" that is a conjugation of the verb "enjôler" which is something like "charm" or "seduce" but with in a deceitful or manipulative way, like somebody who'd seduce to get something they want or appear attractive while being manipulative inside... And i'm not even talking about "enjoliver" that means transform facts in your speech to make things sound better than they are and idealise reality. And the worst is that he didn't make it up fom all that to make a perfect name for his character because it already existed and it's a common name in some regions... It make me SO HAPPY and a bit angry in the same time ahah
Courfeyrac is "the yard by the river" in occitan (southern regional language) and it's basically the most common type of name down there. (+ the town of Feyrac in the south west with its cute little castle by the river)
Combeferre is ancient words for "undergroud" and "iron" so yay mines, this is 100% north of France, at least some simplicity thank you XD

Yes, I can see the thing with Courf and 'Ferre is MUCH simplier - but on the other hand it's so much fun, when there's so many possible meanings behind the name, like with Enjolras! Or at least it is for me, since I'm only enjoying reading it, not doing the actual research haha

One of my friends said she's both horrified and impressed I managed to make this scene cute, somehow xD
Hmm so this is all traditional, which means I'm making a detailed sketch first (my sketches look pretty much like linearts, only lighter and a bit more messy, I'm incapable of drawing a quick lines...) and that takes me to about an hour, maybe? Then I make lineart which is rather faster to finish, like 30 minutes? And then I color it with markers and I like to take my time with it, because I'm still figuring out HOW, so it can take me from 2 to even 3 hours. BUT the thing is I have an attention span of a kitten and I get easily distracted with various stuff while drawing (and sometimes I just STARE at the WIP without any particular reason) and my actual work won't leave me too much time for art, so all that time can be parted into a few separate days (except coloring with markers, when I color - I color xD). You're probably regretting you even asked now, after reading my rant, I'm so sorry :_D

Ok, so I use two kinds of markers: Graph' and Letraset (those are the most common brands here, so I pretty much had no other choice haha). The first ones have very saturated colors and the second have cool pastel tones, so I mix them a lot
