For now, I just call him "wraith"...still messing around with his identity, but he's almost entirely cyborg. The game will take place in a dystopian future, where the humans have fallen deeper and some of them are reduced to beasts.

Visually striking, even at this early stage.

I saw some earlier sketches, with the environment affecting the avatar. Rain striking the outline, causing him to 'glow' in a halo of splashes.
In some other 2d games, I've seen simple shadow layers that get added on top of sprites, implying a cast light somewhere in the scene. Something like that would be perfect for the area under the rock on the left side of the stage, here.

It'll be interesting to see stuff like that come together, to really tie the avatar into the environment.

That sliding after halting/moving might be killer, depending on how precise you make your platforming, later on. But that's just an observation, it might feel entirely different with the controls in my hand.

The shadow/glow layers with a simple shader should be the way to go. A simple light with some simple shader should work for the "halo" too. All that stuff will be pretty fun to implement once I nail the basic gameplay. Also, right now the character is just a sketch, so once I paint him properly it should blend a lot more with the environment. Also I made a lot of progress on the level design and tilings, this one is quite old.

You are totally right about the slide, its FAR too much..I noticed on this particular GIF when it was loading in slow motion...it moved almost 1 unit which is a lot and might prove deadly as you suggest. I should reduce it or even remove it, as some sidescrollers don't even use the "stop slide" and feel super snappy.
