First time changing the color on a horse, and I used your tutorial to do it. Here's the link if you want to check it out: [link]

Thanks!

Step two is confusing. It says lock the layer but you cant color on a locked layer. Do you make a new layer or layer copy?

you should be able to color on it? are you sure you're locking the transparent pixels? that just means you're locking the layer so that you can't go outside the 'border' of the selection. and you only lock the horse layer, or the layer you're working on, not the background or anything.
here's where the lock transparent pixels button is: [link]
did that help?

So you lock the transparent pixels? Or no?

yes, lock them so that you don't paint outside the horse

Also, in step seven. Do you mean ALL the detail? Sorry for all the questions.

cas887 In reply to The-Darkness-of-Fell [2012-02-26 16:29:48 +0000 UTC]

no its perfectly fine! if you compare step 6 to step 7 you can see what all i did and drew in. mostly it was really redefining the muscle details since they had been painted over, but i also touched up the face and drew in the eye. i think i did some highlighting as well, but i mostly used a darker color to define the muscle detailing. that step took the longest because of all the details you have to put back in.

How did you get all the details like eyes and mucles to stay viz=sibale when you color over the horse?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cas887 In reply to Kaieleigh [2012-01-24 00:13:27 +0000 UTC]

well for the eyes, ears, and mouth you never want to paint over them more than step 2 like you would the rest of the body. take a smaller brush and paint the skin AROUND those areas, like the outer ear. for the muscles its a process of painting over (in this case with white), then stopping and going over the muscles with a darker color for shadows and a lighter color for highlights, over and over until you get the desired color. if you wait to 'detail' the muscles until you're completely done painting over, you will have nothing to work with because you've painted over them! it can be a lengthy process but the ending results are desirable (: its all in the steps, but it does take some practice to get the idea of painting/detailing/painting/detailing etc..

This is GREAT! Probably a silly question but has it worked well for you in multi-hued recolors like paints or roans? I'm thinking on making a gray into a roan is why I ask XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cas887 In reply to Espresso-patronum [2011-08-07 02:31:31 +0000 UTC]

hmm a paint is pretty easy. just change the color to your base coat then add the markings. roaning is tricky though, because they have different colored hairs. i would try just changing the color to what you want, then burning spots (burn probably on shadows, because it creates uneven spots), and smudge the spot out to where it looks.. hairy? do you get what im saying? then sharpen the horse to really bring out the streaks. might take a bit of toying around, but that would be what i tried first. it might be easier if you start out with a flea bitten gray, so when you start painting over, at least underneath it looks a little roany.
