This theory may take a bit of thinking and it is spoilers for Bluestar's Prophecy. If Pinestar hadn't left the Clan, Bluestar's death might've just happened and Firestar could be the new leader, not Bramblestar. But that's only if Pinestar didn't leave, because Sunstar would've had his ninth life, since he was only given eight.
