actually family dosn't really detirmine fur color it just increases the chance of the kittens being that color but your idea could be correct

Well, I can explain. Princess,Firestar's sister,is a light brown tabby cat. Nutmeg,Firestar's mother, is also a light brown tabby. So Leafpool probably got the amber eyes and fur color from her aunt and/or grandmother.
