Oakstar banished Mapleshade because she became mates with Appledusk (or Assholedusk). Mapleshade tried to get them across the river, seeking shelter from RiverClan, but all three of them drowned. When Mapleshade crossed the river herself, Darkstar refused to take her in. Appledusk didn't want to be mates with her anymore, and he became mates with... Reedshine. (dang i hate Reedshine)Β

Β Β I think it's funny how at first, when Frecklewish saw Mapleshade's kits, she was like,"Awwwwwwwwwwwww, look at these lil' cutiesssss! They're so ccyyyyuuuuuuuuutttttttttttttttttteeeeeeeee! I can see Birchface PERFECTLY in every ONE of their faces!" Then after finding out they were Appledusk's, she was all," GET THOSE HIDEOUS HALF-CLAN CREATURES OUT OF OUR CLAN!" I hate her for watching Mapleshade's kits drown and not trying to help Mapleshade and her kits when they were in distress.Β

Frecklewish didn't want to get in the way.
She saw the RiverClan patrol nearby and believed they would save the kits. If she just threw herself into the water, she would be distracting the patrol and give them another problem. What she did was the best option for the kits' survival and it wasn't her fault that they died. She didn't even nearly deserve to die like she did.
