This was my submission to the MOSO contest over at Judges: Hit download to see it in full so you can check the contents of the box in detail

This was my third idea for the contest, since my two first attempts at making crafty things failed big time..

First I thought I'd make a linking book and i did complete it BUT the book in the end was to thin and being very old it smelled of so much mould that I thought that no one would want that in their home

My second attempt was to make big clay and papier mache letters spelling MYST complete with the wooden look and metal corners and D'ni writing.. but clay and paper don't mix...need less to say it didn't work out.

SO, my third attempt I thought I'd do something more detailed, something that any myst-fan would want to have (hopefully) since it's what a lot of players look for in MYST: puzzles! So I thought if i can come up with some D'ni inspired puzzles and games and put them in a mystified box that could turn out to something useful. And staying safe using only paper and papier maché and some minor sewing and clay work I knew I could do it without failing too much. So after 2 weeks work...I FINALLY got my entry ready

JUDGES INFO:
So to follow the rules about using something from a myst game I have included MYST symbols and writing in all the games and also the box itself is the MYST book as it appears in the first MYST episode.

The Box:
The box/book is a papier mache moulded shape which I have used patterned paper and painting on to make it look like the original book. Inside is hollow like a box even though it looks like a book that can be put away in ones book shelf

The contents:
1 reference sheet of D'ni letters and numbers.
1 game compendium explaining the rules for each game.
4 puzzles and games called "Two" ( twist on the famous Memory game, but for both 1 player and 2 players ), "Discovery" (jigsaw using only square pieces and double sided for 1 player ) , "Closed" (1 player puzzle to match 9 square symbols in all directions ) and "Six" (Dice game using two handmade dice for 2-4 players).

This box/book and all it's content is made with love! Hope you like it!

**UPDATE** I won with this, woooow So much love right now

Aww thanks, I'm glad you like it It was sent as a prize for the winner of another contest in the so I don't have it anymore. There is a similar contest going on right now in the more active group where the winner will win another deviants myst-prop. It's not the same game-box as this one I made but there are other awesome things to win. Maybe check it out?

It makes me think that it could be a great kickstarter project. Sure, it wouldn't be handmade... but it's such a promising game, by the components alone, that I'd think it would be worth it!
And best of luck with the new contest!

Aww, thanks, such a nice thing to say. For anything done I would have to get the permission from Cyan first, and I do know from other people who has done their own games and objects from the Myst games that they are usually very generous with giving that permission. Something to mull anyway, thanks for the suggestion

Yes they're really sweet people, I keep hearing all the time
Well you know. Myst is my favorite videogames saga ever. Period. I collected all the novels in hardcover, and all games in the special editions because I knew playing wouldn't be enough, I needed more. All the books, soundtracks, artwork, I devoured voraciously. I only bought an artbook of Stephane Martiniere because I knew it contained his sketches for Myst IV. Oh and I have done artwork for the Unwritten RPG (which is the official Myst RPG powered by FATE). If I had a chance to fund a kickstarter like this, I wouldn't think twice about it. I can't have enough D'ni in my life, and it's so sad that there's so little to collect.

It sounds like you are a fan just like me. I too try to get a hold of things from the Myst universe to collect, I've got all the games as collectors editions and originals and on gaming platforms. I've got some items I collected from other fans that they have created as well. I love finding images from other Myst -fans. It truly is a story and game that when it came out made such an impact on a huge group of people, a world to explore without the maming, killing, stressing and rushing...a little dream-world of relaxation and exploration. Love the whole concept. Have you played Obduction, their new game? And I helped funding the Unwritten campaign on Kickstarter!! Wow, so you helped out with artwork there, that is so cool.

Well then here's the art I did for Unwritten:
spacefriend-t.deviantart.com/a…
spacefriend-t.deviantart.com/a…
spacefriend-t.deviantart.com/a…
spacefriend-t.deviantart.com/a…

And I'm sure you already know Shoomlah, an astonishing artist and fellow Myst fan. She did the cover for Unwritten
shoomlah.deviantart.com/

I have a very, very fond memory of my getting hold of the hardcover of the Book of Atrus. I was in a Myst-dedicated forum, and a Swiss gentleman offered to send me a copy in exchange for a picture I had drawn that he liked. We didn't really stay in touch but it's one of the touching memories I cherish. It's been more than 10 years ago, my art was garbage at the time, so I'm sure he did it because he had a spare copy and wanted a fellow fan to be able to enjoy the novels like he did. Isn't that great?
And I'm with everything you said. The idea of books that link you to other worlds, of writing a world into a book and make travel to that world possible? When I first heard of it my mind was blown away. The visuals, the puzzles, the characters... everthing was so great, so beautiful. Ah, if I get started, I'll never stop.
And you know what's worse? I know almost nobody who shares my love for Myst!
Can we become friends?
What is your favorite game of the 5? Mine has to be Riven for how the puzzles are perfectly and seamlessly inserted in the setting and the story. What's your favorite age? I have a thing for Todelmer

Ah that is very cool, I had a look at my pdf-version of the Unwritten and I can indeed find some of your images there. Well done, nice work

Oh yes, I know Shoomlah, I've been following her for some years now. Love her work. I'm also a huge fan of larkinheather and her work on the Myst / the book of Atrus graphic novel. It's amazing!

My favorite is also Riven, both for the incredible visuals and sounds of that one but also for the intricate puzzles. I used to leave the game on in the background to jsut listen to teh birdsong, crashing waves and the wind. Lovely game for all senses.

I'm also fond of Myst 3, Exile mostly because I loved the Saveedro character. Bradford Dourif is one of my all time favourite actors, so seeing him in that game was great.

Favourite age..wow, that is hard to pick. Todelmer is very mystical and beautiful I agree, the space theme there is fab. But i do love the garden ages, probably Eder Kemo is my fave, I love the sound of thunder and rain in there.

I too find it hard to find people who  loves Myst, which is why I'm so glad to have found fellow Myst explorers online and here in dA! Always nice to find another fan to share the Myst-passion with!

Shorah!
Sorry for the late reply!
Strangely enough, they didn't include all of them in the manual. Some of them, apparently, they chose to keep for later use, I guess hoping to publish sourcebooks.
I didn't know of that graphic novel, thank you for pointing it out to me! To be honest, I'm unfamiliar with possibly all of the fanwork, only having played the game and read the books.

I should try and play Riven again once I have the time. It's been years, so all the puzzles will feel new again to me!
Oh, yes, Saveedro! When I saw him for the first time was during the game. I had no idea he was part of it, so as he appeared I jumped on my chair in astonishment. I love Brad Dourif as an actor too. A very interesting face, very challenging to draw. And he's so underrated...

Eder Kemo... here's my big hole in the gaming experience. I never played URU. That's the multiplayer right? I heard so many negative reviews, I never got around to try it... also because I couldn't imagine what to expect from a puzzle game in a mmo environment.
Really, all ages from End of Ages were very haunting and beautiful. Direbo was also one I loved just staying in and looking around. And Revelation's Spire. Also beautiful. In Exile I loved Voltaic most of all. And in the first Myst, definitely Stoneship

CassiopeiaArt In reply to Tazio-Bettin [2016-11-21 21:04:16 +0000 UTC]

I tried playing Riven again a couple of months ago, and despite the very low res on it for these days computer screens I still enjoy it so much. It is still my favourite game of all times I think, nothing has beaten how it makes me feel playing it. Such a gem!

Oh my goodness, you have not played URU? I do know it got very mixed reviews, but despite that it is well worth playing. To actually explore the cavern where the city of the D'ni was and to visit these new ages that you can only find in URU is an adventure well worth doing. The garden ages are such sweet little places of dream and relaxation, and the sense of exploration you get in the game feels more in tune with modern explorers stumbling upon the lost worlds of Myst. It feels much more connected to our real world we live in now rather than being a complete fantasy. You can gather so much information about the history of the saga and ages, about the D'ni-people and the kings, the guilds...how it is all connected. In a way I guess URU is more like a book, but you read it by exploring if that makes sense? And no, you do not have to play the MMO version of URU, you can play the normal, single player mode and explore all on your own Though some ages I think is exclusive to the online-mode, but only very few I think. I can recommend it for sure

I loved Spire too, and Stoneship was my Myst fave as well. In Exile I loved Amateria...the colours, puzzle and music in there is amazing.
