Description A Cooper's Hawk before being released.
This is a good example of the nictitating membrane which is a clear "third eyelid" that goes horizontally across the eyes of many animals including birds. It's used to protect the eye in situations where the animal still needs to see, like hunting or when underwater.Ā
The Orange County Bird of Prey Center does public releases! By sponsoring a bird you are allowed to come out, wear a glove, hold the bird, and send it back to the wild yourself! If you would like to join this experience, you can check out our website.

They're pretty common, especially in suburbs, urban areas, and forests. They're really cool!

I've seen them diving for dinner, snatching up voles from the grass.

That's really cool. Usually Cooper's Hawks hunt more birds but occasionally they take small mammals. I have a friend who puts up a bird feeder just to attract the Cooper's Hawks to come to the "fly thru!"

Having his nictitating membrane half closed like that makes him look sleepy.Ā

Nearly does, yeah, haha! He was quite alert of all the people around him though. I’m sure he slept hard that night!
