Description I don't think it will prove usefull, but you never know... With all the forum posts, news articles, journals, etc... which have already been done on the subject, I hardly believe things will ever change, but let's try
And I must admit I was bored this afternoon

My first tutorial, bear with me

I thought I'd be better off keeping my mouth shut but, well... that's just not me.

I'm a stock user and I am honest to a fault. I have, however, run into all types of stock providers ranging form those that have slightly tweaked rules to those that neglect to save their photos as "photo_by_ stock_provider.jpg.
Since I browse for hours and save things well before I attempt to use them, I've found that re-locating some stockers is a huge headache because of these minor oversights.

Thank God most of you do the rules the same and remember to add the "by_stock_provider" to your files or else I would be lost and have had to forego using some photos for that reason.

The point is, DA needs to develop one set of strict rules for ALL free stock instead of each member choose his or her own rules. Like I said, it's great that the majority use the same rules but the majority doesn't mean "all" by any stretch of the imagination and all of this rule breaking and forced egg shell walking has just about prompted me to stop using anyone else's free work in my future workz.

It has definitely made me stop - go through and scrutinize my own artwork to make damn sure I cited everyone that contributed to my stuff but I will hesitate before I use anyone else's.
Art should be fun for me... not stressful.

I think the problem is, it is impossible to make a fixed set of rules that will content everyone. Even on sxc.hu for instance, there are 3 different sets of rules.
The only solution would be to go completely free (as on morguefile for instance) but all stockers do not agree. As a manipper, I do rename the files if the stocker's name doesn't appear on it, so that I don't have to search back on dA.

Now I guess the rules are a point on which a global agreement sadly cannot be found

Here, here! That's the one thing that will or should resolve the bulk of these complaints for us all. Being able to easily re-locate an artist (photographer) so obeying the rules is easy and makes using these images worthwhile.

Stock saves me a headache because I don't have the time to go out and take snapshots but if it ever becomes a bigger headache to use someone else's stock, I'll find the time, you know?

I don't know which browser you use, but with firefox, dA automatically adds "_by_whateverdeviant" ant the end of the file name when you save a pic frpm the site, so it is easy for me to relocate them

True that and thank the Gods I've just started using Firefox but have you noticed that these files are saved as (ex. photo_by_ro_stock.jpg) instead of (ex. photo_by_ro-stock.jpg) It took me FOREVER to relocate ro-stock because of that glitch. Man what a headache that was.

Firefox rules!!!

well, some stockers, have their own special rules, very different from other stockers....
It is embarrassing .....and sad for those who wanna to use the stock images

Yes but, as a stock-user myself, I can say that most of these rules are similar: credit-link is almsot always a must. The differences are about commercial usage (i.e. manipers making money with our stock) or the nature of manips they allow.
It odesn't take that long to read the rules

er, for me, I'm new here, and I really love DA, but first time when I used a stock image, I just faced an really embarrassing thing, that after I send a note to the stocker and told her that I had used her pic and also credited her, she told me that I can not use her pic before I got her permission, so this is very different from other stockers... Now when I want to use a stock image, I will read the relavant rules very very carefully

Herm indeed I have personally never came across stockers which required previous permission. They are a minority I guess.

Indeed Although I never this problem myself, I hear model stock reporting a lot of thefts (well, maybe it's easier to recognise your face in a manip than a flower ) I guess some people think that using a stock picture in a manip is just like cutting a pic in a magazine to make a collage...

It's true - it happens disappointingly often. And I think you're right. I'll only know it's my stock because I recognize myself in the pic.
