Description My 5th tutorial's done!!!
Click download to get the larger version.

I know what you're thinking:
'But... oh mighty =Cataclysm-X , why art thou submitting a tutorial which wasn't shown in thy poll?'
lol

Well... like this tutorial says: just 'cause.
Actually, I think it makes more sense if you read this tutorial before you'll see my next (upcoming) tutorials:
  • Proportions tutorial

  • Detailed hair tutorial

  • Besides, I'm looking for my muse. I lost it a week ago. I started with several drawings (actors, Kingdom Hearts...) but none of them look right.

Has anyone seen my muse anywhere? If you'll find it, you'll get a free cookie.

I used the work in progress files of my Jared Leto drawing to get this done.
I knew I could use those WIPs for something useful someday...

Anyway, have fun with this tutorial!! Hope you'll find it useful!!!

actually this process is wrong, you should make it step by step. for example first; the shape, then eyes, nose , gestures etc. then shading.
your drawings are good, but they don't have much artΔ±stic value at all.

    Fantastic tutorial!

    Just a question~
When you start drawing, do you first have a basic outline for everything or do you just draw outward from one point?

    Thanks

Hey, question, do you use the circle and X/t guide to draw the head, or not? Ugh, and every single hair? You my friend, must have extrodinary patience or something. Sheesh, I can't imagine the time that must of took. And what about the smudges from your hand? You use a blank paper for that, right?

You produce great work, but this tutorial skips a very important step in drawing: the gestural stage. Without this understructure to a drawing, it's very unlikely for proportions to be right. The drawing starts in a tiny section, then spreads across the paper like mold. It's very hard to check your perspective this way. It's possible for people to be successful with this method, you definitely are, but drawing teachers never instruct in this way.

It's true that an artist should go with whatever method suits them, but it's not a good thing to teach poor drawing fundamentals.

That looks freaky real - in a totally good way.
    Love it!

That's amazing. I mean, I tend not to draw from photos - nothing wrong with it, it's just not what I do - but this is amazing, truly!
I tend to begin with where I'm going to set everything - I figure out what's what in my head. Since I get frustrated when I try to take a small thing and fit it with the big picture, I tend to go in head first (literally, of course). Eyes are second, though.
Nevertheless, this is helpful to, I think, everyone.
You making more of these (I saw all the others)?

    swordtosoul [2008-01-14 19:04:23 +0000 UTC]

this is sooooooooooo nooooooooooot how you draw. you start with shapes, then refine them, then some basic outlines. shade the lightest areas first then work darker, over the WHOLE drawing, don't work in pieces. I know your working directly from a photo, but this is still not the best way to do it.

    πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

    seiginonanioite In reply to Cataclysm-X [2008-02-23 14:54:58 +0000 UTC]

I would say that your method makes sense. I've always had the compulsion to start with the eyes and the face. If you fail, what's the point of having a good figure drawing. The problem I personally find with this method is that when I start with the face it's harder to determine the proportions of the rest of the body. Quite obviously I need practice. You are self-taught, but have you been using any particular strategy to teach yourself (besides practice, practice, practice...) as well as some learning aids? You are excellent, by the way You've achieved the skill I've always wanted. Thank you for the tutorials

    πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

    Cataclysm-X In reply to seiginonanioite [2008-02-25 00:53:42 +0000 UTC]

hmm well I know many artists draw outlines first before drawing the actual portrait as a whole.
but like you said, this method is quite difficult, though I never really had a lot of problems with it.

nah, the only way I taught myself to draw, was by practicing as much as possible! I never used grids or whatever but using a grid is a great way to learn how to draw the proportions right.

    Thank you
