I especially like the little visual story hint you gave with the subtle bluish tones on the face and fingers. I hadn't even thought of that but I was tickled when I realized what you were doing.
While I also really love the shade/light version and was tempted to stop there, I don't think that little clue would have been possible without colors.

The short version of the story is that the child was in a boat that was wreaked in a heavy storm. He washed up on the beach of a Port town called Marona, in the far north of Mercia (Archie comics), half drowned, battered and barely alive. Amelia, a local healer and reclusive widow, found him and did what she could to save his life.
Neither of them could have guessed how the meeting would change their lives.
