Hm! Could be - I'm not sure I've seen that kind in my stores!

If you don't have markers, you should probably be able to take sandpaper to one side! I'd test it out in a small section though.

Wonderful tutorial!

Hope you don't mind if I share a few of the tricks I've learned over the years of using the stuff.

For one I'm terrible at inking or outlining anything so if you're anything like me and make lots of mistakes grab the rubbing alcohol, it'll take that sharpie off in a heartbeat

I switched over to using a crafting heat gun (blow dryers dont cut it heat wise) and a needle tool/pencil/wooden knitting needle when I shrink mine so I have more control over the curling. Nothing more frustrating then working really hard coloring one to have it stick to itself while shrinking.

Not to mention that ovens of any sort hate me (I can *find* a way to burn myself) but with the heat gun you can feel it starting to heat up and move your fingers before you do any damage. Just whatever you do don't confuse your heat gun for your blowdryer! or you can say goodbye to your lovely locks.

Sculpey Glaze=awesome in every way.

I'm so glad someone made a good guide for Shrinky-Dinks, when I first got started using it ten years ago it was trial and error

I've never had problems with the way my craft oven bakes, so I hadn't thought of using a heat gun! Hm. I haven't seen one in stores in a long time, I'd have to go see where I can find one to look into pricing. Thanks!

People seem to be having trouble getting the paper, but I *think* [link] ships international. Wouldn't quote me on it, either way some people would be able to get it from there if they can't get it where they live.

CatharsisJB In reply to MinaXz [2007-08-01 02:43:29 +0000 UTC]

Yep; a bit "blurred" on one side, or like you're looking through frosted glass at it.

So I took your idea and ran with it! ^_^ These were so much fun to make. I put a link to your tutorial at the bottom of my picture comments (hope that's all right). I ended up buying a set of colored fat sharpies to play with and I found that those had a neat effect with the colored pencils (they're really cheap at Staples right now).

(snugs!) Thanks for the tut! Covers all the bases nicely, and also gives info on how to seal it, which I'm betting they don't give. Naughty them, thinking everyone would only want to hang these in windows...!

Great tut, thanx for that!

Thought I should let you know, you can buy printer shrinky-dink paper! You can print out your designs on to the paper, and then put that in the oven! That way, you can use ANYTHING you want ^__^

CatharsisJB In reply to SunneyTehBunney [2007-06-29 15:49:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know - but I don't really need to make a tutorial for that. And it's a lot more expensive than regular SD paper! Blah.

GREAT TUT!
Altho I already know how to do this, I found your tutorial extremely informative and fun. Perfect instructions that cover everything. Very complete. Teriffic pictures and text.
"octobit' LOL !
I loved the bits about the marker because that's usually as far as I get. Hysterical. Sniffffffffffffffffff ahhhhhhhhh
A few years ago I got this stuff out and my daughter and her friend (ok ok I wanted to make some, but I was busy sniffing markers) made some game pieces for a D & D campaign [link]
Have you ever used acrylic paints on the design before baking? I wonder if they crinkle or flake off? I'd like to find something I don't have to seal, that looks matte. The markers are permanent but do come off with nail polish remover and can get scratched off. Any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatharsisJB In reply to Osa-Art-Farm [2007-06-19 19:34:58 +0000 UTC]

Glad you liked the tutorial!

I would think that acrylic paints would indeed bubble and flake - they're not made to shrink.

I really have no idea on stuff to use that doesn't need sealant though! Hm!

I just wanted to shed some lovin' on you for sharing your techniques. I referenced your polymer clay tutorial when I first started playing with that medium, it was a big help. I thank you.

Also, now I'm going to ravish your shrinky dink tutorial since I can't make a charm I want out of polymer clay. Again, I thank you for sharing.

I'm working on this, but the sheets I bought aren't "pre roughened" which is a pain.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatharsisJB In reply to NycterisA [2007-05-22 13:01:32 +0000 UTC]

I have heard you can use sandpaper if you don't want to use markers on 'em!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NycterisA In reply to CatharsisJB [2007-05-22 13:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Well I *do* want to use markers on them. I have those new Prismacolors.
But the ink just slides around, which is stupid because I thought the whole point of permanent markers was that they're permanent. I did a couple, and they're kinda cute but the first one deformed when it shrank. (Not entirely unexpected). Also I wonder if your brand is thicker, since this one cracked when I put the ring through.

So I'm calling around to see who sells Shrinky-dink brand. Either way it will be interesting to see the difference. If there is no difference, my brand is cheaper. So I hope there is a difference!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatharsisJB In reply to NycterisA [2007-05-22 18:16:09 +0000 UTC]

Hm... well, I use a jump ring to attach the keyring to the piece, so there's not excess scratching or anything against the plastic because it _is_ just plastic. But the ones I've made have all been pretty decently hard, so... Not sure!

Until I saw Burrito on the pile of keychains you had made, I hadn't even heard of Shrinky Dinks. It appears I was unknowingly deprived as a child! Needless to say, I'm making a trip to ArtMedia tomorrow to get a pack of sheets and try it out...though I think they only have Polyshrink, which is supposed to be very similar.

Yarhar! Had to go get some of the stuff myself after seeing this. Those look fun!

I am curious as to why you mentioned specifically -workable- fixatif though - is there some reason you might think final fixatif might not work? Or am I just reading too much into it? My experience with fixatif so far has just been with charcoal/pastels, not colored pencil, so I figured it worth asking.

Either way, thanks for the tutorial!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatharsisJB In reply to ruggafluff [2007-05-10 22:57:49 +0000 UTC]

It's been so long since I've worked with paper media that requires fixatif that I think it just kinda slipped my mind. I looked at what I had in my art closet and I only had the workable, so that's what I wrote down
