I am tempted to try this, if it weren't for the fact that my art skills fail on any scale. I'd also love to torment my suite-mates with the smell of baking plastic, since they like to cook and do dishes when I'm trying to sleep.

first of all I would try to color in every tiiiiny part until there was no sun through.. it had to be perfectly filled in.
Then letting my oven get too hot and not leaving enough edge.. and probably a few toher things. They either crackled and crumbled, didn't shrink, or turned into piles of goo

Dang, a pack of ten?? I got the Klutz Books 8-sheet refill D| oh well, I still have some sheets in the original book.
...
somewhere...
Ooh, the mod podge is a good idea! It must also help to smooth it out, 'cuz the backside's still rough after shrinking.

Awesome tutorial. I've been eyeing the SD paper in Michael's for months now, but didn't have the gumption to get any because I figured the magic wouldn't happen because I'm too old. Guess I'll have to try it out anyway.
By the way.. Myth Directions = great book.

so you press the book strait to the plastic, or do you have to cover the dude with paper first...
also... did you put the paper bag IN the oven?? Isn't that super dangerous?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatharsisJB In reply to ShiroChaan [2007-05-06 12:33:05 +0000 UTC]
It's only in there for a minute (like almost literally 60 seconds), so it shouldn't be dangerous unless you're sloppy and let it hang over to touch any heat sources. You only need a very small amount of paper. And yes, you can press the book straight to the plastic but if it makes you feel better you can use another piece of paper between.

Oooh the mod podge and sculpey glaze are great ideas, I never thought of that. Wouldn't it look just as good with just sculpey glaze or does the mod podge do something extra for it? Just wondering.

CatharsisJB In reply to coralyoshi [2007-05-06 12:35:30 +0000 UTC]
The Mod-Podge is what I use to make sure the little flakes of colored pencil don't go anywhere. It's more of a glue than anything, and you can water it down if you need to (in case you accidentally did use too much colored pencil - more water = easier to brush on without moving the pencil particles around). The Sculpey glaze, you can't water down much, because then it just pools in the lowest valleys.

Oooh alright. I've always wanted to try mod-podge, I've had people recommend it to me before for random things lmao. I'm so used to using hot glue and tacky glue for most of my projects.
Thanks for the tips and the tutorial~

Apparently you can also try using #6 plastic (it's plastic that has a recycling symbol and a 6 inside it). Of course, I have no idea if you guys have items labelled the same way in Canada! So I don't know if that's helpful at all. I guess they use that kind of plastic in a lot of restaurant take-home boxes, or in produce sections in grocery stores.

Myth Directions ... X3 That makes me happy. These designs are so cute... I MUST go find some shrinky dink to make space taking objects! To the art store!
Just one question, how strong are the baked objects? Like... do they break when you drop it or are they pretty sturdy?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatharsisJB In reply to Tanya-the-elf [2007-05-05 23:24:02 +0000 UTC]
I made one and put it on my keychain, which is full of... probably about a pound of keys and other objects. And I did drop it yesterday and it was fine. Just don't purposely try to bend it in half or anything, really.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatharsisJB In reply to Yehp [2007-05-05 22:04:29 +0000 UTC]
I really couldn't guess. I've had so many of these things for years, like the Prismacolors (probably the main cost). You really don't want to skimp on the colored pencils though - cheap colored pencils will end up looking, well, cheap. They don't go on as smoothly.
