Description Arrows to block out the sun,
seeking Spartan shields that gleam
in the haze. Tree-limb spears.
Elegant broom-heads atop a metal
reflection. Thunder's echo upon
the ground. A stoic King amidst soldiers.
300. Poised for death,
ready to prove the God false, prove
he can bleed.

Xerxes bids all kneel &
praise in the mud. Adversaries
regret decisions when Persian
sorcerers spark flames with
their fingertips. But Spartans
live for battle. Leonidus' defiance
prompts fate. Blood leaks into the soil.
Weapons fall. In battle, he & his men
are forgetful of lovers back home,
in Greece. Scented sheets have
no meaning.

The first battle is won. Erect the wall,
let the bodies pile up. Vultures circle.
Sharp squawks. They say Xerxes'
arrows will block out the sun.
"Then we will fight in the shade."
