Description
There is happiness in me somewhere...
Hard as I try, I cannot find it.

My belly is a barren nest; no eggs have hatched here
revealing bewildered youth, just come into the world.
The trembling hand resting on my stomach
keeps the tears from wetting my cheeks...
yet the anger I feel boils them and stings my eyes.

I watch as the babe is passed from
swaddling arms to cradling ones,
yet I cannot smile, cannot join in the
soft coos of the other bodies crowding me in.

I am the doubtful onlooker,
unsure of the part I must play as I'm
dragged onto the stage, where the lights
blind me into dumbfoundedness.

The babe is passed to me and all is quiet.
I cannot speak, yet think:

There must be happiness in me....somewhere....
