as it slowly tortures your lungs,
strangling the oxygen from them
with smoggy claws - no
matter how hard your body tries,
it can't remove the death
that's surely upon you,
for the smoke easily evades
any tight grip.

refuse to listen to the cries
emanating from your body,
the choked coughs a type of
sorrowful sob of a prisoner
long forgotten and left behind
in the toxic air swirling about

and take a drag,
coaxing the burning tip of cancer
to glow its pleasure at
your misfortune as you ignore
