Description
She walked along the dark hallway of the old mansion; supposedly, it was haunted. But Dianne didn't believe in such silly superstitions. She had come here to prove that to those false friends of hers who were waiting down the block; what they approximated was a safe distance. And so she walked on…Dianne could just make out a door as it appeared in the shadows at the end of the hall. She reached out her hand (surprisingly shaky) and took hold of the doorknob firmly. Then she heard something: a woman’s voice singing a soft, chilling melody. Dianne froze, her fingers clenched around the doorknob. No other person had come with her; she was alone in the piercing darkness. Her heart skipped a beat and her breathing accelerated; sweat began to trickle from her pores. She could smell her own fear reeking from her armpits. Was this some sort of trick? Suddenly, she heard something behind her........Shhh, thump!....Shhh, thump! The sound slowly coming toward her reminded her of someone dragging a parcel along the ground; one too heavy to lift, like a large bag of dog food. But something was different about it. There was a sloppy sort of sloshing accompanied with it.
Dianne's body went frigid. She grimaced as the noise got louder, closer. Her body shook uncontrollably, like Death himself was closing in on her soul. Then she thought someone must be playing a prank on her. Her “friends” knew she was here; they could easily be doing this to scare her. So, convinced of tomfoolery, Dianne squared her shoulders and forced herself into a shell of bravery (however cracked it may be). She jerked around to face her fears. But what she saw was grotesquely hideous.
It was a horribly deformed man. He had a bald head with several festering gashes that gushed blood with every movement of his body. His nose was crooked and swollen, colored hues of purple, black, and blue. On his arms were red bumps, some cracked and bleeding, while others just oozed a yellow-tinged puss; his right arm looked like it had been snapped at the elbow, yet he was still using it to drag his way toward Dianne. His legs were severed jaggedly: one below the knee, the other halfway up his thigh; strands of muscle and veins hung out of them, leaving a snail trail of dark blood across the old wooden floor. He was dirty and smelled more foul than anything she could imagine. Even more foul than a filthy dumpster on a hot summer day after it’s been baking under the sun.
He grabbed hold of her leg with a bloody hand. Dianne looked down at the three fingers that gripped her, the cracked bones of the missing ones jabbing her calve. Her horror had overcome her. In her panic, she turned to run (forgetting the man’s grip on her leg) but fell flat on her face. He pulled himself up the length of her body as she thrashed and screamed at the top of her lungs, struggling and fighting with every inch of her strength. All to no avail, though, as his mouth came down on her arm and bit ferociously. A retched, scorching, wail ripped itself from Dianne’s throat and hot tears blurred her vision as they gushed down her cheeks. Her throat was raw and she sobbed and shook, trembled and jerked this way and that way as bite after horrid bite, the foul creature ripped the flesh from her bones. His hands gripped her and his heavy, bloody, mass pinned her where she lay. Over and over, she screamed for help, for someone to wake her from what must be a nightmare. But no one came, no one woke her, and the pain grew sharper with each new bite. She was covered in her own blood, quivering with shock, when darkness descended upon her and she could no longer feel the tremendous pain.
~~~~~~
Down the street, under a flickering street lamp in autumn’s chill, Dianne’s friends stood in silence as they waited for her to return. Some fidgeted nervously, some hugged themselves for warmth as the falling leaves danced about them; but none ever noticed the faint scream blow past them with the brisk wind, dying away ever so slowly, echoing to the night sky above…
Great description! It sent shivers down my spine!
It's funny how most people think of haunted houses for scenes of something scary, but then again, I suppose it is only natural for us to assassociate frieght with these homes of terror.
Good Luck in the contest!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it!
It is a strange phenomena. Myself, I've never really found haunted houses all that scary...I think it's more of the idea that scares people. The whole, what you don't know or can't see might hurt you, sort of thing I guess. I find the whole paranormal scene very interesting actually. Hehe...
And thanks again!
I love the paranormal (So of course I am an X Files addict! ) But my parents think I am strange for it. I love watching little specials on ghost houses, possessions, hauntings, ect;. I love watching horror movies, but honestly, I think that the paranormal shows have a greater tendancy to give me the creeps.
And hey, no prob! It was my pleasure!
People that don't really know me well tend to think I'm weird when I say that I think paranormal stuff is interesting. But my mom is really into it too (and most of my family, come to think of it), so it's not a strange thing in my house. And horror is one of my favorite genres! My sisters watch TAPS. I have yet to see an episode of it, but I'm looking forward to it!
The paranormal shows don't give me the creeps, but I do tend to get goose-bumps every now and again. If it's a really good horror movie, I'll get a little creeped out, but I haven't really seen any good ones lately...
Unfortunatly, all of the recent horror movies are far too predictable and are more likely to evoke laughter at then they would at evoking screams. My best friend and I love watching horror movies together and making fun of them, especially if there is someone with us that scares easily and is a sucker for a cute face. Then, we have a lot of fun!
I don't know, for me, I have always had this feeling that there is always some one in the room with me, even when I am alone. I can always feel them watching me. My family believes more in supernatural than in the paranormal, (but they see Paranormal as great entertainment), so they don't know about this thing. They would dismiss me as insane or paranoid because of it. You are lucky in that reguard to have a famiy that is open minded to such beleifs and I am rather envious.
Same here. The horror genre is falling to pieces as of late. I find myself going back to some of the classics like Halloween (the original; I don't really like any of the sequels) and Psycho (same thing). I love the Alfred Hitchcock movies! I can't watch scary movies with my best friend though....she's one of those people that scare easily and always refuses when I suggest something scary. Have you ever seen Event Horizon? I actually thought that one was pretty good!
Oh, I believe in both. I find that sometimes I'll have those weird feelings too. So does my mom and even my sister closest in age to me has had some feelings like that from time to time. My mom and I think our house is slightly haunted (even though my dad thinks we're just imagining things). I remember once it felt like someone was following me down the stairs as I was heading to my room; but everyone was asleep by then. It freaked me out a tad, but it never happened again...at least not quite like that. Other times, my mom will feel someone behind her while she's sitting at the dining room table, but no one actually is. And my sister felt someone tap her shoulder once, but again, there was no one there. It's all very interesting.
I am also spiritual, but my rents (as well as the rest of my family) are spiritual to the point where everything is either imagined or demonic. While I can see some logic behind their beliefs, I highly doubt that most stories of ghosts and haunted homes are contrived to either make money or scare people. I think that there must be a broader explination beyond what spiritual beliefs can explain.
That is what makes the paranormal so fascinating to me! It is the fact that there may be more to this life than what meets the eye, perhaps even links to past 'worlds' and lives. The paranormal, though many even refuse to give it any credit, is an absoluetly fascinating thing to ponder and and makes for a fun writing topic.
Exactly! I couldn't have put it better myself! It's so interesting, yet still so mysterious. Which leaves much to speculation! And the way I see it, there has to be some sort of explanation for these happenings besides the fact that some people are trying to make a buck. I'm sure some people have done that, but surely there are those true happenings (sorry for my lack of a better word) that get turned into stories later on. And I love to write about all that sort of stuff too! It really lets the mind wander through tunnels of thought you never knew you had!
I turned my entry in last night. I am just waiting for it to post on the *TheWritersMeow journal.
Here's the linkage to it. [link]
Hilariously enough, mine also involves a haunted house.
