Description
I stand on a peg leg,
Lounging between my mistress’
Cloaked knees:
The heavy fabric cushioning
My wooden back;
My head resting on
Her slim shoulder,
Face tilted toward heaven,
But blocked by
An ivory ceiling.

The night is perfect for
Soft lullabies whispered to my mistress
As her calloused fingers
Slide over my neck,
Sending shivers down my skin:
Varnish polished ‘till
It shone like new…

Bow gliding swiftly
Over my middle,
I sing out rich tones:
Thick and sweet like
Dark molasses poured from
An old glass jar.

My chest rumbles a
Lover’s longing tune
As I chant Gypsy melodies:
Songs my mother taught me,
Long ago…

The melody, soft at first,
Is low and delicate:
I pour out my heart from
Its cage of bones, only to
Crescendo in honey-coated
Bliss, landing on a melancholy
Chord of a haunting disposition…

And as the vibrating strings
Ring out that final note:
Pursuing the last remnants
Of silence to the flickering
Shadows,
Only to die down and
Give way to the night,

My mistress, with one
Sad, shaky breath closes
Thin vales over her eyes and
Drops a tear that slides
Over a shaded cheek,
Trickles slowly off her face,
And runs down the length
Of my wooden skin…
