Description
Moving pictures flash past my eyes
like old silent movies
clipping on by;
the brightly colored hues
float 'round my head
in a dizzying array:
ghosts from a recent past
not yet realizing they're dead and gone.

The cotton fields grow thick
in my skull, just about pouring
from my ears as I glide
through days (just like those ghosts),
waiting 'till the fields are bare
and the sedative of fog disperses,
revealing the blinding ball of lava
in the deep-set blue above.

My life oozes by until
all that's left is the silent hissing
an old record-player makes when
it has run off the track,
signaling the end of the music;
it just rotates 'round and 'round,
the black needle slightly bobbing
up and down as the hissing speaker
drowns out the light in my eyes
and consumes my conscious mind,
leaving me to live in a state of numbness.
