Description
If life is just one, big stage,
then I must be front and center
with an audience of ghosts
peering up at me through the dusty lights.

They can see my painted skin glow
under tinted beams, like some
stain-glass window of a more
fleshy variety, as I flutter about
and raise my chords 'till even the
hush-mouthed walls pray silence
onto my lips.

Still, my words race on,
practiced and sure-footed as they
jingle off of wooden eardrums,
hardly penetrating the cobwebbed minds
behind those sap-coated plugs.

Translucent smiles are the leaches
plastered to those dead faces;
they remain eerily so through
every act, scene, and mood change,
derailing the train that is
my role - my cracked shell -
as the makeup bleeds from my face
and my sweat requests a part to play.

And so, my final cue:
"How many times have you
stopped to smell the morning dew?"
goes unnoticed...and when the
curtain falls, no applause ensue,
for the spectral spectators
cannot see the play has ended.

No curtain call remains for me;
I merely exit stage right, then
join the audience to watch the play...
