Coming out as asexual versus coming out as gay or bi - thing is, how do people react to asexuals? Homophobes fear gays, but do people fear asexuals, or just not understand them?

Asexuality is a valid sexuality and it faces just as much oppression as homosexuals do; we're accused of being 'just not ready yet' or 'you haven't met the right person' and of course 'corrective rape' as well...although that is a worst-case scenario.
Coming out is for anyone who isn't cishet. That's all there is to it.

Coming out is for more than that. As a high-functioning autistic (who is cishet), I have had to deal with people who see me in person thinking that I'm creepy or retarded or something. Believe me, we have our own share of problems. Lots of them. And if we come out, it could make things better ("oh, so your brain works differently. I think I get it") or worse ("so you're a retard, huh?!").
Coming out is essentially admitting to a secret whose reveal could make things better or worse.

You're right, but Coming Out Day is specifically for individuals who publicly identify as a gender or sexual minority.

Yup. Makes sense.
And regarding asexuals - I don't identify as asexual at all, but sex itself does not interest me. My younger brother, who is very closeminded, so far to the right he makes the Tea Party look moderate, and thinks he knows everything, insists that I'd like it if I tried it, and he insists that asexuals don't exist. Then again, he's big on the manosphere, and gets nearly 100% of his opinions from there verbatim, without any critical thought put into them, so I dismiss his idiotic beliefs out of hand.
