Before the Frankish conquests, the Romans had already converted large portions of western Europe to Christianity. Clovis I was the first Frankish king to convert to Catholic Christianity in 496. By this time the Visigoths and Ostrogoths, following the Arian heresy, reigned most of southern Europe. A fact that would lead to a lot of collaboration between the Franks and the Catholic Church.

The relative peace in western Europe after the 5th century saw the rise of numerous monasteries and abbeys focused on preserving and copying holy texts and scriptures from the ancient era. The former of which was often preserved in intricate illuminated manuscripts, which was to become the stable of preserved artistic expression in the Catholic world until the Renaissance painters.

The spread of Christianity within the Frankish realm was slowly but steadily headed by a few key missionaries, many of which came from Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England. Much of the conversion was done by way of initial syncretism between Germanic paganism and Christianity. The Germanic pantheon of Gods and Goddesses making room for this new God, "Jesus Christ". This syncretic religion was often a step towards full conversion and baptism for many Germanic pagans.
