How to make an English Bridle.Rules:
You may, use this tutorial to make yourself an English bridle for personal use only. You may not make many and sell them. You may not re-distribute or reproduce this tutorial in anyway.
Thanks and have fun!
What you need: See photo 1
2 9mm jump rings
3 buckles
1.5 yard leather lace
Glue. (I use Alan’s Tacky Glue, but other leather glues will work too.)
Needle nose or round nose pliers. (If you want a square buckle use the needle nose, if you want a round-ish buckle use the other)
20 gauge wire
Scissors
Ruler
Wire Cutters
If you can't find the supplies that you need, you can get everything you could ever imagine for tack making from here [link] It's riorondo.
Always remember to use caution and common sense when working with sharp tools and wire. And ask for help from an adult if you are unsure about anything. I am not responsible for any and all damages. So be careful!
------------------------------------
Okay, let’s get started. This tutorial is meant to help you make a traditional sized bridle, so classics or smaller sized models won’t work. If you are making it on the model like in the photos I recommend you use an old or beat up model, you don’t want to get glue on your prize winning stallion. If you don’t have buckles, you can make some by wrapping wire around the tip of your pliers.
Step one: Noseband.
Start by cutting a piece of lace 4 inches long, Remember, it’s best to have it bigger and clip off the end then have to make another one. Glue a buckle on the end of it and let it dry.
Step two: Left cheek piece.
Cut a piece if leather 3 inches long. Glue one end on to the noseband nose with the 9mm jump ring for a bit. But don’t glue it so it’ fixed in place. You want it so it’s a loop and the noseband can move with the bit through the loop. Glue a buckle on the other end.
Step three: Right cheek piece
Cut a piece of leather 6 inches long. Glue one end on the noseband with the bit like the left cheek piece. Now after it’s dry, you’ll want to try it on the horse and see if it fits right.
Step four: Browband
Cut a piece of leather 3 and a half inches long. Glue the brow band so it loops around the cheeks, like the noseband, you’ll need you put the throat latch through it.
Step five: Throat latch
Cut a piece of leather 6 and a half inches long. Glue a buckle on one end. Thread it through the loops on the brow band.
Step six: Reins
Cut a piece of leather ten inches long and glue it to the bits for the reins. If the model you’re making the bridle for has an outstretched neck, you might want to make the reins longer.
I hope this helped you to make an English bridle and not just some glob of leather that looks like moldy spaghetti!

this has helped so much
Oh. just wondering.
But if say i blinged up thr brow band, changed the nose pieces (like add a nose band or grackle things like that) would i be aloud to sell them? and use different materials and stuff? or no?
I have soo much material lol. but i need to get the buckles :/

Question..... how will you know if someone decides to redistribute? Wouldn't it just be any old English bridle? I don't actually think it is fair to say you can't sell what you make.... that is like a teacher saying you can't go out and get a job with the knowledge they teach you.
I mean t isn't like you made it, gave it to them, and they sold it.

Hello!
First off, when I said "Redistribute" I meant the actual tutorial. I don't want people saving the JPG and text to post on other sites without my permission.
On the other question, let's look at it this way: say you buy a kit that includes all the materials you need to make a bracelet along with the instructions for a unique technique to do so. If you took the materials, threw away the instructions and made something entirely of your own creation with your own invented technique, the copyright belongs solely to you and legally you can do whatever you want with it. However, if you use the instruction's technique to make the bracelet that the kit shows - it would be okay if you kept if for yourself because you're using the kit in the way that the creator intended, however if you made them to sell it would not be what is called "Fair Use" and you would be infringing on the copyright. You see, if a company (or person) creates a kit and tutorial for people to learn, they want them to use it for themselves, otherwise, if everyone who bought the kit sold a bunch of the bracelets then the person who made the kit may as well have just produced them herself and sold them. Fair use is kind of like cosplay, technically, if you make a costume of Micky Mouse, even though you made it, the copyright belongs to Disney and they own the character of Micky, and thus your costume. If you tried to sell that costume it would be illegal, because you're infringing on Disney's copyright. However, using it for yourself, with no intention of making a profit, is fair use.
Tack items are a little more complicated, how many variations can you have on a bridle? Not very many. My copyright lies in the technique and steps shown in the tutorial.
In a few words: I don't want someone taking the technique that I developed (and wanted to share) to make 40 bridles and sell them, otherwise I may as well take the tutorial down and go into business myself. It's not really fair to me because this tutorial is meant as a basic first step for takmakers, not a mold that can be used a hundred times for monetary gain. I want people to start with a tutorial (like this one) and go wild with creativity, try a different way to hang the cheek pieces, experiment with different buckles. Make it entirely your own.
As well, a teacher showing you how to hold and use a paint brush is much different than you copying her reference painting and selling it.
Hope that explains things.
(As well, this reply is not meant as any legal advice and should not be taken as such. I am not an attorney, just a model horse lover/crafter.)

I see your point. The fact that you meant copying your tutorial really cleare dthings up.
I don't always agree with copyright laws... like the mickey mouse and the obama "Yes we can" dispute.... but laws are laws.
I took this tutorial more loosely than you might have, which might be the source of my dissagreement. I took it to bea general guide to how to form it... leaving you free to change the color and buckles if you wished. (Add danglies, etc.) I can see if you copied it completely and just went off selling little look-alikes with no spice that it'd be.... meh?
I took it more as a "You can't use my method and sell the results" than a "Don't copy the entire thing exactly as it is and sell it, be creative"

I'm glad you understand. I agree that a few of our copyright laws are a little extreme, but without law we would have chaos, so I can't complain.
Yep, be creative, have fun and go where no crafter has gone before!

too bad it's really bad roads out or I'd be out buying the leather and other tools -.-;; do you have to buy the buckles from a special place?
Nice job, this is very helpful!

I know what it's like! When we get snow, sometimes we don't get out for days. You can buy the buckles, along with any other supplies that you might need from this site! [link] You should check it out!
If you don't want to buy them, you can make them like me by pinching the end of a wire in the pliers then wrap the wire around and clip it off. It may need a bit of re-shaping, but I think it works pretty well!

Lol! You're very welcome! I just want to help people who don't have the money to buy tack or can't find any, like me when I first started out! It would have really nice to have a tutorial like this! I'd like to make one for a saddle but I don't know how I'd do the patterns, I mean, I could trace them on paper and scan them in but I don't know how you'd print them out so they are the right size...
