Hey everyone, back from the dead for now. This is my first attempt at several things, namely making an animation with sound. Trying out the video format for uploading (DA's limitation on quality is questionable)
Sound:
As you've probably noticed, this is my first animation with sound. There is so much subtlety that goes into sound design that make something seem more real. The subtle changes in breathing as Honolulu presents herself, footsteps (heels vs barefoot leading up to the series of kicks), the ambient noise of the ocean, even changes in volume of certain sounds relative to the camera (I need to work on this last one). And of course, making squishy but realistic enough sounds. That being said I hope the ding didn't come off as obnoxious, but I had several requests for that. If the sound ruins it, fortunately you can still mute the video.
Animation:
This time, I've partially been using Forward instead of Inverse Kinematics. I've also come to realize there are limitations to IK rigs in terms of straightening out of joints, particularly the knees. For the kicking movements, I switched from IK to FK to allow for unrestrained movement around said joint which leads to a smoother movement. The ankles, however, remain a problem, as the model tends to sink through the floor at times while in IK mode (had to use FK on ankles). MMD isn't really designed to switch between the two modes, so the transition point can look at little choppy. Hand and especially finger movement still remain as problems for me. Overly static hands can definitely make an animation look stiff, but it is unbelievably time consuming to manually animate fingers. I'm not even sure where to begin fixing this. Getting Hono to burst out her top was a simple trick of switching between two versions of the same model, which was only possible with baked physics.
Physics:
This is the first time I tried physics baking, which results in a smoother movement of a model's rigid bodies. Since MMD only calculates physics up to 60fps, baked physics (without calculations) could theoretically allow for ULTRA slow motion. At the time of rendering, no physics are being calculated. The actual physics for the bodies of these models were built from scratch (hair and accessories come from other models, however).
Camera:
Unfortunately, fewer angles this time as I spent most of my time on animation, model assembly, and sound design. I went with a semi-tracking camera, which can come off as too bouncy depending on the bone being tracked. In the future I want to come up with a way to do whole body tracking, which could eliminate excessive camera movement.
