Description Might be one of the oddest comparisons I've done, but I was just randomly thinking about it and wanted to post something. That meme template I used before is gone now so, just make do with this thing. You don't even have to take it seriously if you don't want to. I was just really bored.
Got the idea to talk about Mabel from--> tho.
character comparison:
Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls)

Ariel (The Little Mermaid)

Lemme start off with the usual deal: I do not hate you if you like Ariel or hate Mabel. If you are a friend of mine, I will not stop being your friend just because you like/love Ariel or dislike/hate Mabel, because that isn't the kind of person that I am. I will always respect your opinion on a character, ship, tv show, video game, etc. As long as you also respect MY opinions as well. Seems like a fair trade, right? Well now that I got that outta the way, lemme start:
I'm probably being extremely hypocritical in saying that Mabel is my favorite Gravity Falls character but Ariel is one of my least favorite Disney princesses, because they're both actually quite similar. They're both incredibly selfish towards their loved-ones and still end up having their way in the end, but I still found Mabel much more likable and tolerable. Not to say Ariel was just completely awful through and through, cause she really wasn't actually, but I just thought Mabel had more redeeming qualities than Ariel and her personality was fun. Ariel's only real "redeeming qualities" are....her awesome red hair and beautiful singing voice (which I will admit her voice is one of the prettier ones out of all the Disney princesses.) (And even if I don't necessarily care for the main character, I still like The Little Mermaid as movie.)
They're also both extremely naive and childish, but I can somewhat excuse it with Mabel because she's a child. Ariel is 16. A teenager. She exclaims to her father that "she's 16 years old and not a child anymore" but she acted more immature than Mabel did! (Okay, maybe an exaggeration but) She continuously disobeyed her father over and over again and never listened to what he had to say. What if Eric wasn't her perfect prince charming? What if this wasn't a happy go lucky Disney movie? What if exposing the existence of mermaids almost caused the END of their existence? What if her story ended the way the original Little Mermaid did? What then, Ariel? Triton could've talked to her better instead of constantly yelling of course, but still. I know most Little Mermaid fans dislike the prequel "Ariel's Beginning" and even the sequel "Return to the Sea", but even in those movies (whether you consider them "canon" or not) Ariel had issues. In Ariel's Beginning I know she was too young to remember it, but humans killed her mom. Maybe that's why your dad hates them so much, Ariel! Cut him some slack for once and actually listen to him! And in Return to the Sea, Ariel has a daughter with Eric who's the exact opposite of her. Unlike Ariel who loved the human world and wanted to live it, her daughter (Melody) loved the sea and wanted to be a mermaid. And Ariel acts the same way her father acted towards her; wouldn't let her daughter anywhere near the thing she loved and tried to keep her sheltered. Kind of being a hypocrite there, eh Ariel? (Hey now, if she can be a hypocrite, so can I lul). Ariel also risked not just her life, but the lives of her family just so she could hook up with a man she barely even knows. Yet fans of her character will say things like "she was just following her heart!" or "her father wasn't being fair to her! She was miserable in her sea life and wanted something "better"!" But she STILL risked the lives of creatures she claimed to care about and her actions were excused by both her fanbase AND the people in the movie. Sure you could say Eric was just her "motivation" to leave her home and go be a human, but she still went to Ursula, an obviously evil octopus, for this. Mabel did something similar. Giving the rift to Bill Cipher and nearly ending the world. However, Mabel did this by accident. She was sad her brother, the one person she was closest to, might leave her to stay with their uncle (who they weren't even as familiar with like they were with Stan.) Ariel knew EXACTLY what she was doing when she went to Ursula. She even called her "The Sea WITCH". What does that tell you? What Mabel did was wrong yes, I'm not excusing it really. But she was depressed and did it by mistake and soon regretted it. She also didn't even know what the rift was. I'm sure if Ford and Dipper had told her she NEVER would've given it up. Yet the Gravity Falls fandom condemns her for it and treats her like Satan (I'm sure if Dipper did it instead they'd be completely okay with it tho.) And people who hate Mabel seem to forget that she's done plenty of nice things for people, not JUST selfish things. She gave up her sock puppet play to save her brother, she got the unicorn hair for Ford to make a force-field, She saved Mermando and brought him back home, she made Soos happy on his birthday (along with Dipper), in the golf episode Mabel offered to give Pacifica a ride home even if they didn't like each other, she sicks Waddles on Robbie for her brother, she apologizes for her mistakes and being mean to Dipper (like in the episode where she made fun of Dipper for being shorter than her or when she made fun of him for being a "nerd" in that board game episode.) etc, etc. I can't really think of a time where Ariel has done anything for anybody, except when she saved Eric. And saving Eric is something any normal person would do. Yeah, she could've totally let him drown, but.....she's not evil. A brat maybe, but certainly not evil. Her father would've let him die, but he hate humans anyway, so there really is no comparison. But other than that instance, I can think of her almost letting Flounder get eaten by a shark, and almost dooming the entire ocean, and never listening to her dad. I can't think of many moments where she's helped those around her. Okay, I guess maybe possibly she "saved" Sebastian and Flounder from being eaten, but they were in those situations because of her in the first place.
Look, I don't hate Ariel, and I'm not tryna kiss up to Mabel either. There are plenty of things Mabel's done that I wasn't a fan of (like her boy obsession or the Mabel Land thing). And Ariel is only ONE of my least favorite princesses, not THE least favorite (my least favorite is probably Jasmine but that's a topic for another day.) I do think both Mabel and Ariel were incredibly selfish (as I already mentioned), but at least Dipper called Mabel out sometimes, and pretty much everyone in the show was selfish at one point. Ariel had her dad turned into one of Ursula's "plants" and apologized about it like she had absolutely no idea Ursula was evil, and she still got everything she wanted in the end. No one called her out on her behavior, and she's still one of the most popular princesses despite the fact that she'd probably be a bad influence on little girls watching the movie (not always the case of course, but you know what I mean.) Now, hate Mabel and love Ariel all you want, it's totally cool. I just thought I'd talk about them here. I don't think Mabel deserves the hate she gets. She's flawed yes, but so is Dipper, Stan, Ford, etc. But I think Mabel's actions are only slightly justified given her age. Definitely not completely, but her being this way seems normal for a 12 year old. Ariel claimed to be an adult but never acted like one. She still acted like a kid not getting her way. If she wanted to prove to her father that she wasn't a child anymore, she certainly didn't...Plus Mabel's personality is just so much fun! I love silly characters like her. And while Ariel certainly had more personality than the princesses before her, I still think it was just....mostly selfish and childish desires. In the end, Mabel may have been selfish, but she was also fun, kind, loving, and silly. But uh, it's really whatever in the end. Everyone thinks differently and interprets these characters any way possible. I just personally like Mabel, and don't care for Ariel too much. I loved Ariel when I was little and hated her dad, but eh....as you get older you start to notice flaws in the things you loved n junk. Anyway, that's all folks. Just thought I'd post something today.

I do feel like people forget that Mabel has done more good than she's has bad.

When people already don't like a character, they don't really even try to look for the positives in them. I do that sometimes, too. But normally I'll at least try to find something to like about a character I otherwise dislike. Like in this post here: Say something nice about characters you dislike
