Both are "canon", as they're different iterations of the same phenomenon.

The Phage is a vague person/title acting as an earthly avatar for the impersonal force known as Gleekill. It exists physically as a mask that is activated when worn. The wearer's individuality is largely dissolved and transformed into a strange is/is not state neccesary to act as the Phage. When the physical host dies or is separated from it [although it's unlikely a wearer is to recover] it cannot act. When another takes the host's place it is resurrected as if never interrupted.

It acts as a counter to Azeiryuum's physical influence ['armor']. Because of this the Phage is often considered a hero, although it's actions can have equally unpleasant results. but unlike Azeiryuum's "soldiers", the Phage's iterations never harbor negative, hateful intentions.
