I already got a backwards story about this.
The pile of tentacles and machine parts is the Mechanic.
The only way he (she?) can work is through an ill-considered, badly-designed and aging "rig" that is constantly falling apart and breaking down from years of use and neglect.
The teenage girl is the Assistant. Her job is to keep the Mechanic's "rig" working. (She is never allowed to fix anything herself.) She knows that any second now, something else on that "rig" is going to break down. Again.
