Description
Lunar eclipse: wikki"A lunar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, the Moon is always full during a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. The most recent total lunar eclipse was on 28 August 2007 where the sun, earth and moon were in total alignment. The initial stage started at 07:52 UTC, while the total eclipse began at 09:52 UTC turning it bronze, with reddish to blood red at its peak. Eastern Australia and New Zealand were in the perfect zone to view the total lunar eclipse or "blood moon".
well, they say we were in the right place for the recent lunar eclipse, but boy was it cloudy and tough to see. i was only able to capture it sporadically, so what you see is the best of what i got. compilation of all of them put together in photoshop, not much editing at all. hope you enjoy

It was mercury passing in front of the sun (well between the earth and the sun) which doesn't happen all that often, both the earth and mercury need to be in the right position and it daytime locally to be able to see it. The next one is 2032.

The dot on the upper left is Mercury, the other one is a sun spot several dozen times the size of the earth...... gives life a little perspective....

hahahaha, the clouds were a pain hey. . even a couple on there have some cloud over them, but i didn't really want to change them at all, so the moons themselves are raw images. next time indeed.. hopefully there'll be no clouds then!!!!!!

thanks so much jay, took a bit to put together from all my shots, and to pick out what went where and what size (the original is over 4000 pixels wide i think), but it was almost as fun to do as it was to watch the original event did you see it from where you are?

Yes, my wife and I got up at 4:00 in the morning to watch it from here. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera that will take shots like that and my 35mm SLR was at my parents house. It was fun to watch though. Is that the first lunar eclipse you've seen?

i think it's the second, but i didn't have my DSLR when i saw a few years ago, so i just watched it (without much enthusiasm i might add). i guess the time of night for me was lucky and having my camera now, excitement kicked in, and the rest you see!

i've just loaded the print up now, but i'm not sure how it will go at the largest size viewed up close. because of the cloud cover, there are 2 phases i'm not so happy with, which is why i didn't enable the print first off..
anyway, it's there if you'd like it i might just order myself one too now, LOL

That's awesome! I remember I tried to take pictures of a lunar eclipse we had 'round here a couple years back but all I had was my little dinky camera at the time and it just looked like a dot.

hehe.. they can be tricky things at the best of times, and clouds and cameras just make it painful sometimes the telephoto lens helps though

Beautiful. And yeah, I can agree on the bad cloud cover. Where I lived, I got to see the start of it, until it disappeared 10 mins before it was fully eclipsed. Didn't get to see the red or anything. XD

clouds are bad! funny thing though, even through the clouds i could get some half decent long exposure shots, so it was still giving off enough light for the camera, just not the naked eye.. but the down side is the motion blue from the clouds which is why these shots aren't as clear as they could have been.. but anyway, it was fun to try

Aikurisu In reply to cdaile [2007-09-08 02:57:56 +0000 UTC]
lol, well you should have seen my pictures. A little white dot in the sky with no detail at all. I tried every way to counter that, so I've decided the default lens sucks.
Was in HN yesterday though and got to take a look at a tele lens. Very impressive. Might even fix the above problem.

LOL no, seriously.. the clouds were terrible i have to say, but in between i managed to get some ok shots, but the motion blur from the clouds was hard to escape.. which you can see in yours too! nice shots by the way
