Description
Came upon this Giant Swallowtail butterfly in the meadow of a nature park."Swallowtails differ from all other butterflies in a number of anatomical traits. Most notably, their caterpillars possess a unique organ behind their heads, called the osmeterium. Normally hidden, this forked structure can be everted when the caterpillar is threatened, and emits smelly secretions containing terpenes. The adults are often tailed like the forked tail of some swallows, giving the insect its name." - [link]

Very nice shot, I really like the little flutter you caught on the forward wings. Or maybe its the DOF, but either way, I like it...

Doug, I just found my Peterson First Guides and realized the specific name of this butterfly is what you wrote "Giant Swallowtail". I thought you meant "large" Swallowtail.

Thank you so much, Doug! I used your information to pull out some description from the Wikipedia for a little public education.
