Description Really? There's no category called, "Crap?"

Alllllright, lemme start by explaining what is IS that you're seeing.

Picture on the Left - Literally, the FIRST thing I ever colored in photoshop. This thing is so old that I don't have the digital file anymore cause I THREW AWAY the FLOPPY DISC I saved it on. But somehow, in my binder of "oh-so-bad" art, I found a really crappy print out of it.

So I scanned it in.

Notice it's from 1998, that's right, 10 years ago. My friend gave me a bootleg of photoshop 3 and made me color something with my mouse. I didn't know how to use layers so the line art was jacked up in the process, I didn't know how to use the lasso tool and barely understood the wand... I mean, the list goes on and on and on.

So yeah, I did like 10 digital pieces while in highschool, cause I hated it. The mouse pissed me off and I just didn't get it. Plus I had a black and white printer so I couldn't even print anything so I was like, WHAT'S THE POINT. I stuck with my markers and color pencils and screen tones.

The piece on the right is a piece I did a year later, one of my last highschool pieces.

SO FOR YOU TRUE BELIEVERS OUT THERE, FRET NOT, YOU TOO CAN COLOR IF MY SORRY ASS CAN. AIN'T NUTHIN TO IT.

i see you also did the whole "finger blob" thing when drawing a hand grasping something and then putting in a little triangle to park the pointer finger from the rest of the mass... good times, good times.

there is a cat called crap. only it's hiddenby s's. in sCRAPs, see? on the other hand, if you put something like this here, no one would see it, and it is rather inspirational to someone trying to get into colouring seeing where you began, and where you've come.

Ho man if you think this is shit, you should see mine,... which I'll upload soon, cuz there's just a box full of crap waiting to show from 6 years ago for me xD

Truth be told, I guess a lot of digital artists loved to draw and colour anime styled stuff before they found out a bit more about their personal style. Even though your picture here is pretty crap compared to what you do now, looking at your present caliber sure has made us think: wow... guess anyone can truly become much, much more if they are persistent and dedicated, like you!

I seriously love this. It's inspirational in the way that it can give people hope (and give me LOTS of hope) that someday I might be reallygood at coloring and shading and stuff. XD You're a very talented artist. I admire you for posting this up. I know a few people who wouldnt do stuff like this, or take down their really old stuff because they're embarrassed by it. But not you! X3 (I still have my old crap up here on dA too. XD)

Yeah, I mean, I think it's important to show people where you start. I mean, I know some people start out amazing, but I sure didn't, and I think a lot of people get this impression that you're either talented or not and that's just not true. A lot of hard work goes into art, and I don't think there's any shame in showing that work.

Yep yep! It upsets me when I see younger artists give up on art simply because they think they don't "have it." Yes, some people have a form of "it" when they start off, but every artist has to develop some time! whether it be drastic or minimal!
I totally agree with you!

I admire the courage you have showing the first thing you ever painted... I couldn't show mine, it's too embarrasing. But if your first attempt was as sweet as this one, you surely had future in the business... and now you can look back laughing at it and being proud of what you do now.

Why didn't you post this sooner?! This is some of your best work!!! j/k

I've only been coloring for a little under a year now, but I can see mega improvements in even what I've done (compared to when I started of course). If I can find the file I'll post it someday. I thought I was the shit when I finished it too. I have it as a print on my wall though, right in front of my computer, to remind me what I started at. It's always a good way to give myself encouragement whenever I feel like I suck at something. I just look at it and go, "Hey at least I don't color like that guy!"

Nice.

I create a bunch of art about 16 years ago on Windows 3.1 in Paintbrush. Technically it was pixel art but I didn't know that when I made them and they were quite photographic despite only being 16 colours.

A few of them I uploaded a few years later to a Geocities account and since then I've lost all of them. I've spent hours and hours in hopes that I might have been able to find the geocities account again.

I'll always regret losing them. I think even this many years later with all the great tools I now have, the work I created as young teen with Paintbrush was my most impressive work.

Omg, I've been there...i can't even look at my first PS stuff...it burns the eyes!! I was such a noob! I didn't start using layers until early this year...I've been photoshoping since like, 9th grade...Yikes.
Anyway, it makes me so happy to see artists posting things like this. You're not shy to show people this! You had to practice just like everybody else- makes everyone feel human instead of just another insignificant artist on DA.
Not to mention it's really fun to see old art like this, and then see where you are now, defiantly gives the artist pride huh? You're wonderful!
