In-depth Traits: (896 word count)

     Playful: Maeve loves to joke around, and loves to make others laugh. Sarcastic by nature, and a fan of particularly bad jokes and puns, she often has more fun with her jokes than others do. That doesn't stop her from sharing her top tier jokes with anyone she comes across, always presented with her classic smirk and dry chuckles. She also loves to start playful fights with her friends, tossing leaves or twigs at them and then prancing away before she can be caught.

     Intelligent: Maeve is very smart, though she doesn't always like to let others know how smart she is. She prefers to be overlooked, or seen more as 'the muscle' than to be seen by others as smart. When she is thinking something through she can often be seen lightly nibbling on her claws. She's a great tactician, but she rarely gets the chance to show that off since she usually just throws herself headfirst into most any situation with reckless abandon.

     Brave: Maeve isn't easily scared, and there's very few situations that would even give her a moment of pause. She doesn't worry about how dangerous a situation may be, especially if someone she cares about is in danger. She will gladly put herself into harm's way to protect her loved ones. She's not afraid of getting physically hurt, she's far more afraid of losing someone, so it's a no-brainer to her; if she has a chance to protect someone she loves, she'll take it in a heartbeat.

   Honest: Maeve doesn't have any tact, she believes tact is just not saying true stuff. While some may appreciate this trait, sometimes she can be too honest, and has many times really hurt others feelings with her honesty. Her honesty is the best policy mindset makes sure that she's never misunderstood, you will know if she loves you. Conversely, you will also know if she hates you. She will be the first to say if she thinks someone is out of line, or about to do something stupid, and she will say it loudly, not caring who may hear.

   Observant: There is very little that gets past Maeve, she's more than sharp enough to pick up on various subtleties, and smart enough to make fairly accurate guesses as to what is going on. More often than not this can work in her favor. However, she has misread situations before, and since she's so confident in her abilities to read others, she doesn't believe when others tell her she's incorrect about something. She can fixate on those situations, and become rather agitated if she believes she's being lied to.

   Impulsive: Incredibly impatient, Maeve struggles to actually pause and think through things. Sometimes her impulsivity is nice, it leads to some fun spur of the moment excursions with friends or family to go see this interesting place or try something that they've never done before. Other times, however, it can be dangerous, as she will leap into a situation with no regard for her personal well-being. Be it saving someone from a rushing river to defending the defenseless from a large bear, Maeve will do it with zero hesitation. Thus far her strength and skill have gotten her out of those situations unscathed. But if she can't learn to control her impulsive nature then it's only a matter of time before she gets herself into a position that she cannot get out of.

   Spiteful: Maeve isn't one to take mistreatment, whether real or imagined, well. She does lash out at real or perceived injustices inflicted upon her and her friends, and can get rather nasty from time to time. On the low end, she can just give cold shoulders, and talk to everyone but the person she's angry with, but on higher levels of this she will go out of her way to make life as difficult as she can for someone. Kicking sand into another's food, dropping your favorite thing in a river, 'tripping' and stomping all over something you've worked hard on? She'll do it without a second thought if she decides that you have done something that she cannot forgive, even if everyone else forgives you.

   Jealous: Maeve loves her family and friends with her whole heart, and can be rather protective over them. In more dangerous situations this is great, but in most other situations this appears as intense jealousy, especially whenever her loved ones give extra attention to another that is outside of Maeve’s circle of friends and family. Oftentimes this will start with just simply glaring at the offending animal through narrowed eyes. She will also try to garner the attention of her loved one, distract them away from the ‘stranger’, but if this doesn’t work she has actually pushed herself between the interloper and her loved one, and tried to knock the perceived interloper down a peg or two, in a misguided attempt to drive them away. She feels like others are trying to steal her family or friends away from her, so it can be hard to get close to her, especially if you try to get close to her through a mutual friend. Maeve is afraid that one day her friends or family may end up replacing her with someone better, and she will do anything and everything she can to make sure she isn’t pushed away.

Pre-Group History: (2162 word count)

~~~ Birth ~~~
Maeve was born into the Aelcoast pack, her mother died giving birth, and most of her siblings were still-birth, or died shortly after being born, leaving Maeve to be raised by her father. Faoláin loves his daughter very much, but he does struggle with his own sadness over losing his mate.
~~~ Childhood ~~~

Growing up, Maeve was very close to her dad, and spent much of her time with him, as well as with her grandfather, Caspian. Her father's best friend Kerrigan, was also around for much of Maeve's childhood, and as a pup she didn't think much of Kerrigan, other than an extra set of paws to play with her and listen to her silly jokes. Anyone who was around was subject to her odd sense of humor and pulled into play sessions. Not having siblings left her always searching for other playmates, and she became close friends with another wolf her age, who she gave the nickname Smudge, because she was always covered in paints. They spent almost every day playing together.

As she reached adolescence, she began to notice things that rubbed her fur the wrong way. Her dad spent so much time with Kerrigan. Maeve started to pay more attention to the two friends. She couldn't remember a time when Kerrigan wasn't around. Was that weird?? Her dad would smile, really smile with Kerrigan. Why? He didn't smile that way with her. Insecurities crept into her mind faster than Maeve had ever experienced before, until she couldn't stand it anymore.

~~~ Confrontation ~~~
One evening, as the sun was setting over the horizon, painting the water in glorious colors of orange and yellow, Maeve cornered her father, giving him a steely glare. She was 1 year old now, and she felt that she was old enough to understand what was happening here now.
"Dad, we need to talk," she stated flatly, her normal smirk absent from her face. Faoláin obviously realized how serious his daughter was and nodded his head, trying to lead her to a quite place, but Maeve didn't move. "What's going on with you and Kerrigan?" she demanded, not bothering to beat around the bush.
Faoláin blinked in surprise, obviously this was not what he had expected his daughter to say. "What do you mean, Maeve? Kerrigan is my friend."
Maeve scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Don’t lie to me!” she said, loudly enough that a few heads turned to look at the pair, before politely turning away, though Maeve didn’t miss the ears angled in their direction. Multiple members of the pack were listening, not that she cared. “Obviously there’s something going on!”
Faoláin stared at her, as though he had no clue what she was talking about. “Maeve…” he began slowly, gently. It pissed her off.
“You know what? No! I’m not an idiot, and I’m not your little pup anymore! I can see it happening!” As she spiraled further in her ire, she noticed another pack member pause to look at the pair. But it didn’t stop her or slow her down in the slightest. “You… you smile with him. Not in a way you have ever smiled at me! Not in a way you ever smiled with anyone!! You cannot stand there and tell me nothing is going on!” As she carried on her voice rose in pitch, until she was practically yelling.
It felt as though all eyes were on them now, and her dad seemed to notice, glancing around before looking at Maeve and lowering his voice. “We can talk about this later, when you calm down,” he said, equal parts irritated and tired. He was always tired.
Maeve slammed her paw into the ground so hard it sent shock waves up her leg, her fur bushing up until she looked twice her size. “No, dammit! You cannot brush me off this time! Tell me the truth! You love Kerrigan, don’t you?” she demanded, and while her dad’s jaw flapped open in shock, she rushed onward. “You love Kerrigan more than you love me. You probably didn’t even love mom, did you?”
Now anger and hurt flashed across Faoláin’s face and he bared his teeth at her. "That's enough Maeve! I loved your mother more than words can express!"
Maeve cut him off. “Not enough I guess.” She turned and stomped away before he could say anything else. As she turned out of sight of her dad, she practically bumped into Kerrigan, who started slightly and offered a light hearted apology to her that she didn’t listen to. Instead Maeve bared her teeth at him, ears pinned back to her head. “You win,” she snarled before shoving him out of the way as she stormed off.
~~~ Decision ~~~

Maeve ran far enough from the main bulk of the pack that she felt she could have some privacy, before she collapsed into a heap on the ground. She covered her nose and eyes with her paws, she didn’t really want anyone to see her cry. The hurt crept through her body as she replayed everything over and over again in her head. She knew she was right. She knew it. She didn’t know why her dad wouldn’t admit it. She didn’t know why he didn’t love her.

Her toes reflexively curled over her nose, as though she could hold back the pain. A soft rustle behind her alerted her to the presence of another. Maeve didn’t need to look to know who it would be, especially not after the spectacle she had made back there. “Hey, Grandpa Cas,” she whispered, not moving to turn to him.

“Hey, Lil’ Eve,” he responded easily, as though nothing had happened at all today. She could hear him step forward and sit beside her. He didn’t say anything, and neither did she. After a short time she risked a peek up at him. He sat staring out at the moon slowly rising in the sky, as the world transitioned into night. Slowly Maeve uncovered her face, resting her head on her paws as she quietly cried.

“I miss my mom,” she said at last, her voice cracking rather embarrassingly as she spoke. “Is that weird? I don’t even remember her… but sometimes I miss her so much that it hurts.”

“It’s not weird. I think it’s normal. But you still have your dad, and me,” Caspian said, still looking up at the moon, as though he knew she wouldn’t want him to look at her right now.

“It doesn’t feel like I have my dad,” she admitted, swirling one claw through the dirt.

“He loves you,” Caspian assured her, and she nodded her head. She knew he was right, to an extent at least. But how much he loved her, that she wasn’t really sure of at all. Would he pick her, if it came to it, or would he pick someone else? Kerrigan’s face flashed in her mind and she flinched away from it.

Slowly, Maeve pushed herself into a sitting position, and looked up at the stars glittering coldly in the sky. Now Caspian turned to look at her, expression as impassive as ever, though she thought she could see a glint of sympathy in his eyes. She turned to look at him with a rueful smirk, as tears still burned her eyes. “Grandpa Cas… I don’t know if I can stay,” she said, even as her heart split in two.

He stared at her quietly for a moment, Cas didn’t look surprised, but to be fair he never did. “You are old enough to make your own choices, and if you need to go I won’t stop you. But just remember, no matter what, this will always be your home, if you want it. You will always be my Lil’ Eve, and you will always be welcome here.”

Maeve started to shake, and she couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. She leaned down and buried her face into his shoulder. “Thank you, Grandpa Cas,” she whispered tearfully. She wasn’t sure how long they sat like that, but finally she lifted her face and looked at him. She was ready now. “I need to go for a while, I think I’ll be back one day, but I just need time. If I could just ask one more favor?”

He nodded his head and she smiled sadly at him. “Please, don’t tell my dad about this. When I’m ready, I’ll talk to him myself, okay?”

“Of course. Take care of yourself, we will be waiting for you,” he responded easily, though she thought he looked a little sad.

“Goodbye,” she whispered shakily before rising to her paws and running. If she doesn't run, she fears she may lose her nerve.

~~~ Parting ~~~
Maeve hadn't run far before a shadow moved in front of her, bringing her to a halt. Slowly Smudge came fully into view, the white parts of her fur shinning in the moonlight. Maeve only paused a moment before she rushed forward and burried her face in Smudge's shoulder. She didn't know how to tell her best friend that she was leaving. How was she supposed to explain it?
But Smudge saved her from it. "I heard what happened. With your dad."
Maeve nodded her head, slowly stepping back. "I can't..." she began, before pausing and sighing, shaking her head and trying not to cry. "I need to go away for a while," she whispered, looking back at Smudge.
She could see the sadness in her eyes, but Smudge just nodded her head. "I know. I'm really going to miss you, Splash," she said, and the nickname pulled at Maeve's heart.
That's when an idea sprung in her mind. "What if you didn't have to?" Smudge blinked at her, and Maeve rushed on. "You could come with me! It could be another Smudge and Splash adventure! We could see all these new places and..." she trailed off as she noticed Smudge's face fall.
"Splash... I wanna go, but my dad and mom need me," Smudge said, her voice cracking.
Maeve nodded, fighting back the tears. "I understand," she whispered, to hide the saddness in her voice. This really was it, wasn't it? But... not forever. Just for now. She looked Smudge in the eyes, willing her to believe her next words. "I will come back, I promise, Smudge. We'll have plenty more adventures ahead of us, right?"
Smudge smiled through tears and nodded. Maeve leaned over, nudged her cheek with her nose, and smiled. "See ya soon, Smudge." And with that she gently bushed by her best friend and into the gathering darkness.
~~~ Alone ~~~

Maeve wandered for a long time. She didn't really have a plan, other than to see new things, experience life beyond her home and her family. It gave her perspective, she felt, as well as time to think about home, Smudge, and her dad… and Kerrigan, unfortunately. She had never had so much time away from someone she didn't like, and she didn't know what to do with all this jealousy and anger.

Kerrigan obviously wasn't here, and there were only oh so many innocent bushes she could take her frustrations out on before she started to feel bad. Sometimes, on the bad days, she would think too hard about how she was out here, so far from her dad, while Kerrigan was back home, working to steal her father from her. All she could do was try to shove away those feelings and just keep moving.

For months she carried on in this way. During her travels she met many wolves and other creatures, some she directed towards Aelcoast, if they seemed trustworthy enough. She still remembered her grandfather's dream to rebuild Aelcoast, and would do everything she could, even from this far away from home, to make his dream a reality. It also helped to talk to strangers and get her mind off her jealousy for a short time.

She also gained the habit of assisting strangers with all sorts of things. Need help bringing down some prey? You got it. Can't reach that tasty fruit up in the tree? She'll let you climb her back to get to it. Collecting moss for a nest? She'll help you carry it!

It was one day when she came across a group of adolescent wolves bullying a small pup that her anger finally had an outlet. Charging in, she roughed up a number of the group and the rest quickly realized they were outclassed and ran off. Scooping up the small scrap of fur, she carries him back to his den and waited for his mother to return.

After some brief socialization, and graciously accepting the thanks of the mother, she was off again. Maeve just let her paws go where they please, she still wasn't sure what she needed to find or learn before she would be ready to go home, but she thought she'd recognize it when she found it.
