Trigger Warning: This piece depicts a rabid animal attack, death, and brief depictions of PTSD. If any of this is triggering, please refrain from reading.

This wasn't in Mae's plans today. She had hoped to find a nice berry bush to eat from, and then carry on in her quest to find Kitsune. Instead, here she was, watching a fox chasing after a young gray colored wolf, probably not even a year old yet. Mae growled. She hated dogs, wolves, really any large canine… but the fox didn't seem okay, and the wolf looked terrified.

Swallowing her hate, she stepped out of the bushes, deciding to reason with the fox. "Leave the wolf alone!" she shouted. "You've taught it a lesson it won't soon forget, back off," she said again when the fox didn't even acknowledge with so much as an ear tilt.

The young wolf, however, did notice her. They skidded and ducked just in time to avoid the leap the fox took at them, dashing towards Mae. "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING," the pup wailed desperately, practically sobbing. "They're gonna kill me, please!"

Behind them, the fox had landed clumsily, and rolled across the ground before finding its footing. With a vicious snarl, the fox turned and charged blindly at the wolf again. It was now that Mae could really see the fox. Its eyes seemed hollow, its movements were erratic. It snapped its jaws at the air as it ran, and its mouth was foaming with drool. The sight of it pricked at her fur, a sense of great unease settling onto her shoulders. Mae willed the fox to turn away, willed the wolf to outrun them. But the fox put on a burst of speed, and the wolf seemed exhausted.

"Damn it!" Mae snarled, dashing forward. But she was too late. The fox jumped onto the wolf's back, teeth connecting with the back of its neck. One shake was all it needed for the wolf to fall limp, but it didn't stop the fox. Crazed, it continued its assault. It didn't even acknowledge Mae until she was practically on top of the pair. It raised its bloodstained muzzle with a gargling growl.

This animal was a danger to everything that crossed its path. She could see that now. Mae leaped high, jumping over its head and landing on its back, much like they had with the wolf. Quick as a snake, she bit down on the insane fox's neck, killing it with one quick shake.

She stood over both of them, panting and shaking. Memories crashed over her head, a tidal wave of pain, threatening to sweep her away. Her scars started to burn, her vision blurred. "Why didn't you stop?!" she screamed, her face inches away from the fox's face. It's blue eyes stared up at her, her vision blurred. She tried to shake her head, to clear the fog that encroached around her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, her stomach rolled. Her fathers's face stared up at her, eyes lifeless, and yet accusatory.

A strangled scream escaped her as she scrambled backwards, off the bodies. Huddling on the ground, she covered her face with her paws, fighting to keep from vomiting. The world spun, and all she could hear was her heart pounding in her ears. "No, no no no, no," she whispered, digging her claws into her head forcefully. "Not real, not real."

Slowly, she lifted her head, stepping over to the bodies. It wasn't Inari anymore, just some fox. Mae stumbled away from them, stopping a few pawsteps away. She dug her paws into the dirt, trying to get ahold of herself. Trying to shake away the pain that suddenly wracked her body and mind. She opened her jaws and screamed.

~~~~~~~
It took a little time before Mae could rise and leave the clearing, her eyes were hard, like chips of jade. As the bodies grew cold behind her, and the blood stained grass pitifully waved in the breeze, she made a vow. No matter who it was, she would not hesitate to protect someone ever again.
TLDR: Mae comes across a young wolf being attacked by a rabid fox. During her moment of hesitation, the young wolf is killed by the fox. Understanding that the fox is a danger to all the animals, she then kills the fox. In doing so, she triggers her PTSD. After regaining herself, she leaves with a vow to not hesitate again.
