Description
"Run boy run,
This world is not made for you
Run boy run,
They're trying to catch you."
~ lyrics from Run Boy Run, by Woodkid
Trigger Warning: This story is about a nightmare, familial loss, grief, and guilt. If any of these are triggering please refrain from reading the story!
The forest was dark. So dark it felt as though if you stepped too deep in the shadows, they would swallow you whole. A voice called, echoing through the trees, distorted in an odd way. “We need to run!” Kitsune jolted into reality. Mae's eyes flashed in the dark ahead, her white tail tip whisking out of sight. Kit glanced around, cackles danced through the tree trunks. Red, hungry eyes flashed at them. It was coming.
Kits paws were churning, Mae ran just ahead, ears forward, focused on the path ahead. The cackles continued, but now they could hear snarls and growls…. And their screams. It's their fault. Why did this happen? What could he do? They had to run. It's the only way.
It burst through the bushes behind them. A void of darkness, with bloody teeth and red eyes glowing in its mass, lots of them. And from somewhere deep inside the master, were the wails of their parents. Kit was sobbing, trembling. It's hot breath was on their tail, it was leaving trails and splatters of blood. Kit looked away from it. Mae was gone. Now her scream was inside it too. Kit was alone. It was on them so suddenly. This was it.
Kit wrenched awake, into the real world, barely holding back a scream. But it was the real world. The home they shared with Karo’Mana and her pups. Kit had been having these nightmares since the last friedensfest. But they've gotten worse since the deaths of Lief and Indra. Kit hadn't needed to ask Karo how they died. Kit could see it. Her nightmares, the look in her eyes, Kit could see that they hadn't just died, they were killed. Kit wasn't sure if they wanted to know the details. But it hurt to see Karo hurting like this.
She was so important for the tribe, and Kit didn't want to disturb her with his nightmares, so they moved their nest just far enough away from Karo and the pups so that they wouldn't get kicked by Kit during a nightmare. Karo needed all the rest she could get. But this time the nightmare kept lingering in their mind, Kit couldn't shake it at all, and the panic and anxiety rolled in his chest like churning ocean waves. Quietly, Kit crept out of the den, creeping to a shadowed space away from most of the dens, just barely managing it before they broke down, huddled against a rock wall.
Rocks shifted nearby, and Kit whipped around, squeaking in fear and trying to detangle their numb legs to scramble away. Ossatura was there, though, her light fur shining in the faint moonlight. In contrast the black on his fur, which was almost all that was visible with the position he was in, sucked him into the shadows of the night. “Kit, are you okay?” her soft voice asked, her brow furrowed in concern.
Tremors rippled along his body, part fear and sadness, and part in a vain attempt to suppress the emotions and be okay enough to send her off. The last thing Kit wanted was to trouble her. And how would they explain the nightmares, and why they have them. What they are. But she would see right through him if he tried to fake it, he knew her well enough to know that. Tears pooled in his eyes, and he lightly shook his head, no.
Without a word, she came and settled onto the ground near him, tilting her head to look down at him. “Want to tell me what’s wrong?” she asked softly, yet with no note of pressuring him to tell her either.
Kit opened their mouth to start, couldn’t, and had to try a few times to swallow the lump in his throat before trying again. “I h-had a n-n-ni-nightm-mare,” Kit managed to stutter out. He hesitated, should he leave it at that? “About… the l-l-last time I s-s-saw my f-f-famly.” The words stumbled from his mouth before he could decide consciously if he would say more.
Ossa didn't say anything, she just sat with them, giving quiet support, and company. Kit appreciated that no questions were asked, they weren't ready to elaborate. Eventually the panic ebbed away, and Kit was able to thank her, and excuse themselves back to go to sleep. They couldn't stand to sleep away from Karo though, he pulled his nest back into the pile, nestling into it, and into his adoptive mothers warm fur.
TLDR: Kit experiences one of his recurring nightmares about the loss of his family, and is comforted by Ossatura.
Omg finally posting it! I finished this month's ago, but then dA ate the whole story part and I had to rewrite the whole thing x'D But the motivation finally returned and I managed to slap together a good enough replica of the original story lol
