Description 2 sighed, dragging a hand across his face and turning the broken end of a pencil between his thin metal fingers. He straightened his back, aching joints protesting the action, and exhaled slowly. For the first time in quite awhile, 2 felt as if his soul was as tired and weary as his body. It seemed he was trapped in this perpetual state of fatigue, iron chains dragging him down. The elder stitchpunk knew if he'd been resting as he should, he wouldn't feel nearly as weak. However, sleep had evaded him these past few days. The inventor would lie down only to end up sitting of the edge of his bed with his head in his hands. That flickering flame within him, bright and happy, had been snuffed out for the time being.

2 shook his head in despair, bending over the desk he and 5 had cobbled together and closed his eyes. His poor, poor boy. His boy...

A soft rapping came from the other side of the door, asking permission to enter. 2 lifted his head and assumed a gentle expression, taking a deep breath before calling out softly, "come in, come in."

The door was pushed open and, to 2's slight surprise, his fellow elder quietly entered the room. 2 shakily stood, immediately on guard but reminding himself he no longer needed to be. 1 approached him slowly, wearing a tired frown. He had only donned his ruby red cape this morning, and his normally regal figure seemed wilted and worn.

"Are you alright, 1?" 2 asked mildly, tilting his head in concern. The pale stitchpunk waved a dismissive hand as he stood beside the desk.

"Fine, I'm fine. But 6 appears to be inconsolable. He's completely silent and will not leave the damned corner. I've tried to snap him out of it. Unsuccessfully. Where is 5? I know he can sort him out." 1 said gruffly, keeping his optics fixed on the desk beside them.

"He is tending to 7 at the moment," 2 replied gently. "I'll go see to 6, perhaps I can soothe him. And you - when was the last time you slept, 1?" As the inventor collected his cane, 1 turned his head away and did not answer. Instead, he began to mutter crossly, "they need to begin picking themselves up and stop this moping about..."

"Grief manifests itself in many different ways, my friend. You must give them time to adjust, to heal." 2 took a deep, steadying breath that 1 did not fail to notice. "What they need at this time is an understanding leader."

"Yes, but we must keep moving forward. We must look to rebuilding our lives, and we cannot forget that, despite the end of the war, the world we live in is still incredibly dangerous. We must begin to take proper precautions - "

"You cannot expect that of them right now," 2 said, looking icily at the other man as his tone became stern. "This is not the time to ask them to completely move forward, considering what has been left behind. "The elder stitchpunk steadied himself with another breath. "I will ask you extend kindness towards them. I understand you may not grieve as heavily as they, which is perfectly in your right. But I implore you to practice some empathy while they find their footing once again."

2 paused, dropping his eyes for a moment. "Especially with 7. This is going to take a great toll on her spirit."

1 dropped his own gaze for a moment, brows furrowing as he regarded 2's words. "I cannot say I understand what the rest of you feel. I was a hardhearted, cold man, and I will not deny such." His soft words were laced with regret, and 2 looked up. "This loss is going to affect us all for quite some time. But sitting around forlorn will do nothing to help us find our footing. You know that's not what 9 would have - " 1's gentle command was abruptly cut off as 2 whirled around, face twisted in anguish.

"What 9 would have wanted?! You don't know what he wanted! You never took the time to get to know him! To understand what he felt, to understand his struggle to forgive himself, to understand how he changed all of us." 2 trembled on the spot, chest heaving and lower lip trembling. His fierce tone dropped into one of deep sorrow. "I had so much I wanted to tell him, to show him. I was going to take him scouting, show him to best places to find supplies. I was going to teach him all that I knew about life. He...he was such a smart boy. A fiercely intelligent young man, and so eager to learn. He was going to live the life he deserved. He was going to be happy."

2 gripped the edge of the desk tightly, closing his eyes and giving a small shake of his head. "I loved that boy. I loved him as my own son. He was such a smart, wonderful lad, so kind, compassionate...and, damn it, I miss him so very much." He covered his eyes with a hand, falling silent but trembling deeply.

1 blinked, staring impassively at his fellow elder. The inventor had been a beacon of light in the storm, offering words of comfort and reassuring his despondent clan. He'd helped 5 heal the injured, unconscious 7, then held the mechanic as he sobbed in his arms. 2 had been trying his paramount best to keep some semblance of hope alive within the clan. And he'd been strong for everyone else when he missed 9 too.

Reaching up, 1 hesitantly laid his sharp, claw-like fingers upon 2's shoulder, giving a gentle clap. For one of the few times in his life, the leader of the stitchpunks was lost for words. 2 understood nonetheless and gratefully patted his fellow's hand, taking a deep, shuddering breath and straightening.

"I shall tend to 6. If you see 5, please let him know where I am." 2 said softly, once again taking his cane and hobbling out of the room. 1 gave a nod, looking after 2 as he disappeared around a corner. Silence fell upon 1, but instead of following the grieving man, he instead looked down the floor. He could nearly feel the grief left beside the desk, waiting for 2's return. Quite suddenly, the room felt much colder.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Semi-quick, sloppy-ish work. Trying to get back into the groove of things, playing around with colors and the whatnots.
After 9's death in 9TSR, 2 takes on the role as the calm in the storm for his grieving family. His empathy and warm kindness is invaluable to those who have been deeply affected by the loss of their friend. I love working with 2 as a character with multiple faces and aspects to his personality.
I do wish his role in the film had been a little stronger - its obvious he takes an immediate liking to 9, and takes him under his wing fairly quickly. After he returns, 2 quickly grows more and more attached to 9 as he finally gets a chance to know the young man, already with so many burdens on his shoulders. And when that chance gets ripped away from him, 2 quite suddenly understands the pain of losing a son.
Nevertheless, a father must be strong for his family.
I know 2's probably just got his eyes closed, but all I think of is how anime characters' eyes will go white to signify shock or...uh...pretty much just shock.
9: The Savior Returns Chapter 28 Chapter Twenty-Eight: Farewell To A Fallen Savior
No more than a few hours later, 7 sat at 9's bedside. She was holding the talisman on her knee with one hand. With the other, she was gently stroking his cheek and running her fingers along his brow. The deathly cold of his body made her hand tremble, yet she never could turn or look away from him. She could only sit there, gazing into his kind, peaceful face. He almost looked like he was sleeping, and 7 wished that he was. He would be able to wake up then be just the way he was.
7 was still trying to absorb the devastating shock of his death. Someone so powerfully alive could not just disappear. And yet here he was, silenced, giving his life for his family. His presence had been so sincere, so strong, that sometimes, they felt like he was still there. Only an instant later they would realize he never would be again. He was never coming back.
The young woman sighed softly, placing her hand on his cheek and stroking gently with :3
Nicely written!! Man, it just makes me think even more on how 2's character could have been explored more, it's so clear that he had a distinct and likable personality even if he was in the movie for a few moments....Honestly what I really love is the subtle details included in every character that I wish the movie had done more! Glad that fanfiction exists!
But oh man!! I'll have to go and read all 20-ish chapters because I really enjoy your writing!
I agree with you 100%. Shane put a lot of thought and heart into these characters and though he didn't have much time to show them to us, its just enough to work with. Especially on ole' 2 here. He had such potential as a fabulous character. I wanted to see him inventing things with 5 and 9! I'm sure he has plenty of new ideas.
omgggggggggg i hope you like you'll have to tell me what you think
Your portrayal of 2 is so good; and these guys' relationship is something that really intrigues me
What they were or what they could've been in a friendship sense is such a curious matter
I love the way you've drawn them, you're so good at making the 9 characters all expressive in a way so close to how they canonically look in the 3D animation, dang
Ahhh thank yooou. I love writing 2, that salty old sea dog is just a fun fellow. And I love working with their relationship and kind of using context clues from the characters on how that dynamic possibly would be after a life-changing war followed by true peacetime. Folks have different personalities in each instance. (Shaney give us a novelization of the sequel or somethin' man we gotta knoooooww alll this stuuuuuffff)
Dah thank you lady, as always. I just so love their designs and the details in each stitchpunk. Plus its good practice to get 2 to look right since the Scientist forgot to give him a chin and when I used to draw him he looked like a turtle.
Looking back on the 9 movie, now that it’s finally on Netflix, there’s a lot of subtlety in not only the backgrounds but the characters as well. Shane Acker really put in a lot of thought to this film. It’s a shame the film critics felt that the movie was hollow despite being visually stunning.
Ooh it's back on netflix?? Cool, it wasn't some time ago! Got taken down ans put up quite a few times xD
Yes I agree; I'd say it had to do with the fact it was a bit too short for the size of it's potential x)
But for his first movie it is REALLY well done, lots of respect for it and heck yeh the visuals are epic
Really? Netflix took down 9 several times? Strange. I didn’t think they’d do that so frequently.
Aside from that, I hope that Shane Acker is able to have a successful movie career. You can tell that Shane Acker used tons of real life items, such as bicycle chains, to show the components the stitchpunks and machines are made of. I even liked the scientists logs, all the way from the creation of the B.R.A.I.N to the stitchpunks.
now, I’m having flashbacks to when I first got into the 9 fandom thanks to the fanfiction comic 9:genesis.
Netflix is a strange place, despite being a potential sanctuary for creative animations.
By the way, do you know of the latest 9scientist post on Facebook. I checked it myself, even read a few responses. People seemed to go crazy over that one post for a short while. For me, I’d just rather think that post was some sort of fluke of a bot.
seeing some 9 posts, some of them date months before the movie premiered.
by the way, what were or are some of your favorite 9 ocs created by other 9 fans?
for me, they were lily pily’s 10, 11, 13, and 12, Jen jen’s Morlocks, acrosanti’s cast, lonesome wolfe’s 14 and 15, a 9 fan’s oc called angelika, I feel that the list goes on.
still, it feels like a bit of a shame that most of the fan arts seen don’t seem the consider the physics of the added pieces to the characters. I’m not sure if they’ve noticed that the 9 movie concept arts showed that the stitchpunks have a layer of cushion under their fabric skin.
To quote Bart Simpson >>www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tFDsL… <<
So refreshing to see the dynamic between these two that didn't disturb me in any way. Also I just love how you write 2 in general. Here he's had to watch that boy suffer and all he wanted was to help him take that pain away. Only to watch him die young. So I could see how the grief would effect him. In most fics, 9 and 2's relationship is almost none existent.
I take it 1 just doesn't want to think about it anymore. He never seemed good at expressing long periods of sorrow. I wonder if he's had any nightmares of 9's ghost coming back to haunt him.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Celestial-Rainstorm In reply to Piddies0709 [2018-11-14 15:47:02 +0000 UTC]
I'm a very detail-oriented kind of a chick and I loved the subtle, sadly short-lived relationship between these two. 2 seems to quickly like 9, and even the littlest of gestures like 2 taking 9's hands or pushing him behind him, willing to protect his new friend lead me to believe they would have developed a strong relationship. 9 is barely hours old, and is badly injured, but still tries to go after his friend anyway. After all that's happened to the young man, 2 wanted nothing more than to resume his role in 9's rocky life.
1 doesn't quite know how to process these many feelings he's encountering. He felt so negatively about 9, only to realize how wrong he truly was at the last second. He's feeling regret he doesn't want to feel. He resigns himself to believing 9's soul was destroyed.
Gennethapang [2018-11-11 05:24:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes! YES! A good 9 fanfic once more! Also, you indeed did a good job showing 1's and 2's platonic relationship together. Seriously, sometimes I can't unsee the fan art pieces of them in a sexual relationship, again, it's just not my cup of tea.
I should also mention that I'm glad that you got the designs of their hands right. Shane ackee really put in a lot of thought designing these stitchpunks to show the scientist's gradual improvement honing the design.
Celestial-Rainstorm In reply to Gennethapang [2018-11-14 15:35:09 +0000 UTC]
Yyyeaaaah that's certainly a ship I won't sail on. I imagine 2 was created to be 1's companion - another elder that acts as a foil to 1's domineering personality. 1 just ended up winning out in the end. But 2 seems a forgiving soul and I think he and 1 would make amends (as best they can)
And these two guys' hands and feet prove to be the most troublesome to get to look correct. Shane certainly did put a lot of effort into the designs of these guys, down to the littlest details (like how 2 has smile lines from the corners of his optics and 7 has smaller hands and feet)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gennethapang In reply to Celestial-Rainstorm [2018-11-14 16:53:29 +0000 UTC]
2 has smile lines on his optics? I didn’t notice. I got to go see that. For me, I noticed that 7’s feet are shaped in a way hat allows for proper sprinting. For 1’s optics, the way they fold looks like eye wrinkles. Seriously, each of the stitchpunks’ bodies has their own story to tell, whether from each other or the scientist. Also, the scientist is a fascinating character in his own right.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Celestial-Rainstorm In reply to Gennethapang [2018-11-15 02:34:35 +0000 UTC]
He does! They're like from the corners of his optics, they're real obvious in the scene where he's trapped in the birdcage. I could rave on and on about the subtle design choices in each stitchpunk, and you put it perfectly - they have their own story to tell. Even small differences give these guys a little more character. 9's face and body are thinner than 5's, and that poor boi has some skinny ass arms (obvious Frodo/Sam reference lol). 4 has a little dimple on his thigh that his brother doesn't have. I could go on and on about how much I adore 7's design. Most obvious female features on cartoon characters are big eyes, big eyelashes, poofy lips, skinny body, and boobies.
7 literally only has one and a half of these traits. Her eyes are actually slightly different then the men's (her "eye" lenses is actually bigger), and she is more slender. But the subtle hints into her feminism are wonderfully put together to create a legitimately beautiful character that defies the usual standards of "beauty."
And yes, Julius is wonderful to explore and I've been sort of doing so lately . I'm looking to expand on him a little bit more through 9's eyes - he finally gets to know the man he never did.
or at least mister 9 thinks so huehuehue
We sometimes did make comments that 5 looked a little chubby. Also, 4 has a dimple on his thigh? Shane Acker thinks up every little detail! He's growing to become one of my heroes!
Also, 7's design was pretty great in showing the subtleties of her physical womanhood. Oh god, imagine if 9 was done by Blue Sky Studios. They would've forced 7's design to look too human like with all those cartoon female traits.
And now I'm having flashbacks to when lily-pily made a comic skit commenting on the silly people who felt that 7 didn't look enough like a female.
Lily-pily did make some of the funniest fan comics of the movie 9 that I’ve ever read. Though, looking at them now, she seemed to write them and 9: genesis at the expense of 9 as a character or the friendship between 9 and 5. Regardless, these comics still hold up.
That’s understandable. Everyone has different tastes, and I can see why 9:genesis isn’t your cup of tea.
Ah, those days with so many 9 ocs, so many that are love interests for 5 and/or 6. That tendency to get 5 and/or 6 paired got old real fast.
personally, there were some or few of 5’s and/or 6’s love interests that were fascinating or enjoyable in appearance, personality, or both.
Still, when they’re portrayed as Mary Sue-ish, it definitely shows in the ocs.
as for the ocs in 9: genesis and 9 genesis precision, I’m curious as to which ones are ranked from most tolerated or liked to...least liked or tolerated.
for me, I just like them equally. They’re all funny or interesting on their own.
