Description
I worked on this piece for quite a while. I hope it brings Ida some joy when she returns to us again. It is a complete repaint, no smudging the photo. The only exception is the model. I repainted the flowers, ladybug, snail etc. Anything I didnβt credit below came straight from my brain. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.The Dragonfly [link]

This is really, really beautiful! Love all the details (including the trim on the arm straps), the rich, vibrant colors, and the composition. Youβve done an incredible painting job β count me among those whoβd love a painting tutorial from you!

Thank you for the I started on a tutorial last night but geez it is taking a long time. Is there anything specific you would like to see how to paint? I scrapped what I had started last night, I couldn't fit it all onto one page. Just get back to me and I will work something up. I have always heard that when you are trying to teach someone how to do something pretend like they have no idea what you are talking about. In other words I think I went into too much detail.

Iβm just starting to get the hang of painting with the smudge tool, let alone airbrushing. Do you pick colours from the original stock photos with the eyedropper tool, then go on to paint freehand on different layers (do you put the layers you paint on at a low opacity and paint directly over the original)? Do you use any special brush tips? Mostly airbrushing or a mixture of airbrushing and βordinaryβ paint tool? Do you use filters (e.g., Gaussian blur, diffuse glow filter) and/or different layer modes? Iβve looked at tutorials about painting hair, but can only make it look halfway successful by using the blur tool rather than regular brushes or the airbrush. I hope this is the kind of questions you were looking for re. putting together a tutorial; let me know if thereβs something more specific. And only answer/put together a tutorial if you have free time and enjoy doing it β donβt feel obligated or pressed for time. Thanks for being such a sweetie, Kristin!

It depends on what I want it to look like. I picked my own colors for the mushroom and snail but the flower colors were already so pretty I used the ones that were there. Now as far as tips I block in the entire shape first with the brush tool in one color on a seperate layer. Usually a dark color so I can go back with the burn and dodge tool. I use those alot. And I do change the opacity so I can see where to burn and dodge. Now hair was the first thing I learned how to do. I use the smudge tool first on about 85 strength with a really small size brush. The trick I have found to painting is go back with a small brush in white and draw individual strands and only smudge them lightly so the texture is still there. I will do a tutorial....eventually but for now I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the tips, Kristin, they're very much appreciated. I tried painting hair but it looks more like spaghetti strands; I'm stubborn though so I'll keep on practicing, and advice like yours is what helps me get it right eventually !

CelestialDreams22 In reply to saperlipop [2006-12-01 14:37:19 +0000 UTC]
You just need to go back over your "spaghetti strands" with a softer brush now. I learned by trial and error, you'll get it
