The Elk Totem tried his hardest to put on brave face for his children, and for Kaen.

But it broke him.
There was nothing that he, or any of the other Elks could do to save his mates life and he was left to watch her wither away from her former self. Though she put on her own mask, the sadness in her eyes was transparent as the infection that refused to be shaken. Though he tried hard to not blame himself, how couldn't he? His entire career was dedicated to treating the injured and sick, and he had utterly failed at healing Kaen.

She wouldn't see their children become adults, if it was destined for any of them to find partners - she would miss that as well.

Inhaled sobs caused his body to tense in shocked motions, film of tears running along the edge of his eyes before he shut them tightly. Sharp breaths catching in his throat, before the sound of.. of-

Polarstags' eyes openly with a jolt, to spot that of an Elk with his head towards the heavens. Bugling.
His ears twitched, swiveling in that of confusion and amazement that the creature would get so close to him.

Did the Elk stag feel his sadness?

In confusion, he just sat and stared.

Polarstag is grieving the future loss of his mate, being as helpless as she is in the situation of her passing set in stone. The Elk Totem is surprised by an Elk Stag, who seems to sense his pain.
