Almost made this title a pun... but I didn't want things to get... violet. -yeets into the sunset-

Here's my little piece for t he Hoshi no Kaabii group's newest little monthly event!

So I'd wager this HC isn't going to be particularly obvious to most people by just looking at the image(s). That's fine with me because I'm very keen on offering my super in depth, very smart, STEM-person logic because honestly I'm kind of proud of this one. Which should tell you exactly how exciting my life is at this point, honestly.

Firstly;

The headcanon that I wanted to convey here was that Meta Knight and Kirby, (and any other orbs), are tetrachromats.

For those who don't know, a tetrachromat is any creature with 4 types of cone cells, (the cells in your eyes that allow you to see color). Humans are trichromats; we've got three types of cone cells, and that limits our color vision to what we have since named the spectrum of visible light, which is actually only a very tiny piece of the spectrum! Tetrachromats, with that extra type of cone cell, can see a wider range of colors than humans; specifically, they can see into ultraviolet. This is an ability found in multiple species of diurnal birds, some species of lizards, and types of bees. And now that I have a say in things, also in magic orbs.

Many different animal and plant species have markings and patterns on them that are only visible under ultraviolet light, which is what I tried to do a little here. Nothing spectacular, but I'm hoping I got the idea across well enough XD I also ended up darkening the bottom panel just so it'd pop a bit more.

Now you might be wondering where this idea even came from. Valid question.

Episode #85. Or the one where everyone became nocturnal because they were getting sunburnt to the extreme and then people decided to build a balloon to float up to inspect the ozone layer of the atmosphere and they discovered a floating danger noodle. God I love this show. Thing is though; the Ozone Hole Monster is only visible to the kids whether they have those sun visor things on. Which look like ski goggles actually, so that's cool. There's no explanation for what exactly these things do or how they do it, or where they even got the things in the sub or dub, (and why would there be? not exactly plot relevant information), so this is all sort of conjecture on my end but... the goggles themselves are tinted purple, and practically the entire episode is people raving over UV rays, right? The conclusion I reached when I first watched the episode years ago was that the goggles probably enabled them to view things that only reflect UV light, which would explain why the monster and the hole itself can't be seen otherwise. Might be stretching it, but that was all I could think of at the time. But then maybe... two years ago now(?), I remember re-watching this one and going "...wait." Because neither Meta Knight nor Kirby are wearing these things.

You could argue that Meta's got something underneath his mask, or even in the visor itself that's functioning the same as these things, but Kirby is very clearly not wearing anything. Yet he can obviously see the monster, since he kicks the thing's sorry tail and blows it to smithereens five minutes later. All without any eye gear. If the monster really is only visible as UV light, then simply put, Kirby would have to be able to see it to do what he did. And if you'd consider him and Meta Knight the same species, then it stands to reason that Meta has the same magic bird eyes that Kirby seems to.

So. Puffballs can see into the ultraviolet. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Either that or they just didn't want to draw goggles on the characters. Maybe they thought it'd look dumb. But I like my idea better XD
