The Pythia was the priestess presiding over the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. The Pythia was widely credited with giving prophecies inspired by Apollo, giving her a prominence unusual for a woman in male-dominated ancient Greece. The Delphic Oracle was the most prestigious and authoritative oracle in the Greek world.[link]

In 480 BC, when Xerxes the son of Darius of Persia, was preparing to conquer the Greeks, the Pythia's prophesies foretold the annihialation of the 300 Spartans and their King Leonidas followed by the eventual defeat of the Persians.

Hear your fate, O dwellers in Sparta of the wide spaces;
Either your famed, great town must be sacked by Perseus' sons,
Or, if that be not, the whole land of Lacedaemon
Shall mourn the death of a king of the house of Heracles,
For not the strength of lions or of bulls shall hold him,
Strength against strength; for he has the power of Zeus,
