In the Oz Novels I have written, and am currently writing, there is a magic known as "Hearting".
From The Flight to Oz Book I:Arrival
Chapter 2 "Dorothy and Ozma"
With love in her eyes, Ozma then reaches her hands
out and removes Dorothy's princess crown. They then sit
on the couch and with a soft kiss...
This is almost all they need to do. For what will
happen next is the most wonderful, most pure, most
amazing act of love one can almost do. The lights are
dim, but there is a strong green glow in the room. Their
left hands hold each other closer and then the wondrous
magic begins!
Dorothy's right hand is glowing with a soft, green light
- the color of Ozma's eyes! She places her right hand on
Ozma's heart. And with a soft sigh, Ozma takes her
glowing right hand and places it on Dorothy's heart! A
glow emanates from both. For they are now...”hearting.”
It took Glinda the Good 10 years to research in all of
the Great Book of Records for examples of the closeness
of Ozma and Dorothy. The stories of Ruth and Naomi and
of the covenantal friendship of David and Jonathan and
their loyalty, their sacrifices, compromises, and emotional
attachment greatly helped Glinda.
It was the examples of comradeship between soldiers
that also impressed her as she looked over novels and
history books. While mankind's ability to ever greatly
slaughter each other grieved Glinda to no end, the
outright closeness of those who were thrown into the
maelstrom of war showed Glinda the pure power of what
could be.
Thus it was that Glinda the Good bestowed, first to
Ozma and Dorothy, and then to Oz, the power, the
pureness, the loving magic known as hearting. With it,
two beloveds share their hearts, their thoughts, and their
love. It is intimate, yet innocent, bonding, yet pure.
Once a couple have “hearted” each other, nothing can
ever compare. Its effects are immediate, yet can last
hours if the beloveds wish.
As with any magic, even more with one so powerful as
hearting, it can be a double-edged sword. That is why,
though it is available, few outside of Dorothy and Ozma's
inner circle know it even exists. Once the bonding has
occurred, it cannot work with any other, as the beloveds
are in a circle that cannot be broken. Also, it is normally
done in a very private setting but as Glinda the Good is
fond of saying, “There is always an exception.” Also,
depending on how deep feelings have been hidden, not
all thoughts can be shared, except by the greatest effort.
There is one rule, one boundary, that can never be
crossed. It is that one cannot perform hearting with one
who is dead - for the life will drain away. Though this is
not normally a problem in Oz, there must always be, even
the tiniest sliver, the smallest seed, of life.
A beloved can also initiate one who has never hearted
before.

There are two Unintended Consequences of Hearting: One is what enabled Ozma and Dorothy to defeat the Evilons from Book I. The second one is that because the bonding is so pure and so strong-once it has happened-the body will automatically prefer Hearting. Sweet Betsy wanted a baby and her husband Jonathan was more than accommodating. (He had a family on the Earth that was lost to terrorism.)
Betsy knows what must be done-the consummation of their marriage-in order to try for a baby but the Hearting took over.
She and Jonathan were both being prepared for Hearting before they had even officially bonded with it. They never had a chance.

To be very clear Tristan is a human who has been transformed into a mouse. Yvaine is a Star. She is in human form b/c she got knocked out of the sky and ended up in the magical kingdom of Stormhold.
