Description
Finished little Huey animation test. It goes by quick for all the work involved. I'll likely be uploading to youtube for people who enjoy pausing at the right moment to search for slap-job in-betweens. Yall won't find any!Created in Flash CS3, on a Wacom Cintiq 21x.

Thanks! Looking back at this, I know I could have made it more interesting for the short period of time I had. Nonetheless, it was still a good learning exercise.

Shoot! looks so smooth to me man!
Yo Drew, do you know of any good websites or reference for animating in Flash or have any tips? I'm really looking for some work and I think if I can get some more skill down in that I can get an actual good job. If you get a chance man let me know if you know anything! Thanks man!

Websites for flash I'm not sure... I would say, instead, to watch general animation tutorials explaining motion and how to achieve what you want with it. Flash itself is a pretty simple tool and sure there are all kinds of little tricks but those just come with trial and error and experience. While I encourage frame by frame drawing for flash animation, most professional work will be symbol based, so it is good to get those under your belt too.
11secondclub.com will have inspiration for you. You can watch something you think is amazing then read the critiques section and they will tear it to shreds. You can also submit yourself and it is a monthly contest.
In any case, anytime you feel like sending me a file or whatnot you are welcome to.

The animation itself took a couple evenings after work. The drawing time to get his character model down was maybe a few dozen sketches over the course of 2 or 3 weeks. Getting settled into the drawing style and look was the most time spent for sure. Thanks for the comment!

Ah, Okay. I ask because I'm interested in animation but I was curious about the amount of time it took for you to animate this. =] It looks awesome!! Also, did you go to an animation school or did you teach yourself?

I gotcha. Well its a ton of fun! I took a four year BFA program at Savannah College of art and Design and have been in LA for three years working in cartoons commercials and now branching into iphone games too. Taking some time off right now so I don't burn out!

So Savannah College was a good school for you for animation?
I recently graduated from college myself and I'm taking some time off before considering grad school. But I love writing and animation so I've been trying to decide where to go? Did you like Savannah pretty well? =3

Like most colleges you just pay for them to open the door. I did tons of out of class projects and spent thousands of hours working and learning. I wasn't thrilled with the animation program at the time but I've met newer students saying they've added a lot more traditional animation classes so kids can actually learn to make things move.
I don't know what you're first major was but one of the big things with art students is they have to figure out if what they're doing is just going to be a hobby, fun, and stress relief, or if they are going to commit to taking the extra steps needed to make a career of it. It's a big decision for sure heheh.
Only other thing I can say is enjoy your time off!

lol, alright thanks!! My major was communications and my minor was creative writing; and I graduated at the top of my class so; I'm feeling like this restless-ness because I wanna do something that incorporates everything I love. But I feel like right now should also just be my planning stage you know? ^-^
Thanks so much for the advice though!! I'll definitely look at Savannah and a few other school with an animation program to see if that's the next direction I want to go in. =3
Thanks again!! ^^

Communications and top of your class! Nice! How's the job field look for that? If I were in your position it would definitely be a tough choice sadly decided by where I am financially, because college is more expensive than ever, and loan companies may as well be mafias. I love animation, but I don't always love the industry, if that makes sense. If you were top of your class you probably don't need me telling you all this though.

The job field is pretty diverse actually! The only factor that's hard to overcome is that most positions ask for someone who's had like 3-4 or 4-5 years of work experience, ya know? And I've /just/ graduated so.
Other positions have internship jobs but they're just for those who have /not/graduated yet.
But there's a lot of positions open, I just can't decide what I want to apply for specifically yet. And I'm also looking at the job LOCATION in addition to the job description. I wanna live somewhere that's lively and not too, too far away from home right now so...
it's like a lot of stuff to consider. And I want it to be a job that I know I'm going to enjoy. =] That's one thing I admire about animators like at Disney or the people behind Spongebob and other shows...what they're doing is FUN and they LOVE it. I think a job should be something you enjoy, especially if you're going to do it for a long time.

I feel ya. One thing with animation is accepting the fact you may not be doing it for a long time. The industry and production schedules can take their tolls on people. I've only been out here three years and sometimes I really need a recharge. Just always fighting for that balance. Good luck!

Thanks!!! I guess For now at least I can brainstorm different animation ideas too, huh? I'll just have to see where the wind takes me!
But I do definitely want to try my hand at it. (I was introduced to flash like my Junior year of High School with 1 class and my college didn't have any classes in animation so I have no doubt I'll probably have to learn some more modern ways to animate than a keyframe at a time. )
Thanks again for the encouragement! MaybeI can note you now and again for help if I need it?! If you don't mind I mean. ^^

I don't think I'd mind that. I like helping people and honestly plan to be a teacher when I leave this industry. Hopefully I can leave when I want to, and on two feet. That's my biggest goal.
Also, keyframe at a time is called "straight ahead" which can be very experimental and teach you new things. Another way is to lay out your "Key" poses to get them down, then begin in-betweening. Just a quick tip

As well as I can make things move in flash, I am inversely talented in actionscripting. The word jumble on rollover is intentional though, of course.
