Carla knew the dangers of going topside, but she had no choice, for she needed food. The Horvacs were still there, the alien invaders who had destroyed the Earth in just three days. it had been nothing but chaos since they had arrived. At first, it was believed that they had come for the planet's resources, or that they wanted the planet itself. But unfortunately, the truth would be something even worse. The aliens had come for the people-- not as slaves, not as food, but rather breeding stock. They were a symbiotic race that needed a host for their offspring to exist. Nobody knew the process, only that it involved an egg.

For Carla, she would have to be careful not to be spotted by the many creatures that now ruled the Earth. If just one of them saw you, then you'd be taken away and never seen again.

She had learned to be stealthy. She had learned to hide. But she had her doubts. It was largely due to a reoccurring dream that defeated her from within. There wasn't much to the dream other than an image of her sitting in a room with some sort of thing-- or egg. All the survivors had these dreams now. Someone had suggested that maybe they were already being mentally connected to their new mates. Others said that they were just dreams.

Carla tried not to think about it. She just wanted to get food.
