"If you grab the cage again I'll deduct a point!" The referee warned, and Gracie James pitched her body forward as she uncurled her fingers from around the cage. The accomplished brunette gritted her teeth and berated herself. She'd expected a coronation, not a scrap, but this dammed junior has put her on the backfoot, or on the cage, or on the mat, every round so far. She was likely on her way to losing her second straight round in a 3 round fight unless she could impose her will on the fight.

"How's it feel to be part of an upset? Gracie?" her opponent sneered, pressing the fair complexioned woman against the cage. Gracie winced and swore as Jillian transitioned from trying to dump her unceremoniously on the mat to digging her knee into Gracie's ribs.

"Show me something or I'll stop it!" the ref warned sternly. An embarrassed Gracie shrugged one way before spinning around to face her foe. She might accept a lot of things, but she could not accept ending her NCAA MMA career on a TKO loss in front of her friends, family and classmates.

It was truly now or never, and Gracie James chose now.

She framed as best she could, one bent arm and one lifted knee serving as a rail to prevent the tenacious college junior's advances. Jillian left holes in her approach, but Gracie felt as if she only noticed them in painful retrospect. She needed to get her head clear and make a good decision ahead of time for once.

Wolf fought to maintain her clinch, grunting with each shot she threw as though any of them might finally shatter her opponent's resolve. When she finally relented, James made a gamble and hoped she wouldn't regret it later.

The two girls hit the mat in a heap, and Jilian seemed surprised, or insulted, that the shorter senior had even attempted a takedown of her own. It made no difference that the bell rung shortly afterwards or that she'd likely banked enough rounds to force Gracie to hunt for a stoppage win. Gracie had given the scrappy junior a new wrinkle to consider and bought herself one more round to go submission hunting.
