Eschewing patience and caution often paid dividends for UCLA's Dara Camacho, who set the all time record for first round finishes in women's collegiate MMA. Her record was not without blemishes, but the number 4 fighter had earned a spot in the championship specifically because of her ability to generate these types of situations. Where other fighters might be content to break down their opponent over 3 rounds, Dara could hardly wait 3 minutes.
And so, after a favorable exchange left her opponent backing away and clearing the cobwebs from her brain, Dara bit down on her mouthguard and charged. Breanna parried the first two incoming punches but not the sting kick to the ribs that followed. The Louisiana senior shot a check hook of her own that clanged off Dara's jaw, but not hard enough to stop the black-haired woman's onslaught.
Dara threw strikes like she only had 10 seconds to win the round, and another hard knee followed her straight punch as she pulled her taller opponent into the clinch.
"No hard feelings, right?" She gasped, finally allowing herself to catch a breath.
Her opponent's heavy breaths were the only response she received, and the two women fought for control, jockeying for position with their hands and feet. Breanna pulled away, unwilling to risk further entanglement or further damage, but couldn't keep Dara from dragging her to the ground.
The Southern fighter bit down on her own mouthguard and huffed. This shouldn't be this difficult. She'd practiced counters to the things Dara wanted to do, drilled the older woman's habits. Instead she found herself sitting on her butt, defending attacks that Dara had never tried before on film. It was as if someone else entirely had entered the cage with her.
The UCLA med student alternated between light strikes, submission attempts, and wrestling, as if unable to commit to a single line of attack. While it'd paid off during the standup portion of the fight, here it prevented her from securing the victory. She finally settled on an Americana submission attempt but had barely set up the positioning for it before the bell sounded to end round one.
"Dang! That went by fast! Let's do that again soon, kay?" She beamed as she rose from the mat and walked back to her corner.
For her part, Breanna Rhodes never wanted to repeat that sequence again.
