Description

“Okay,” Coach Saunders said after 15 minutes or so. “New partners.”

“Thanks a bunch, and welcome to the team” Molly said before turning to snag Jody as her new partner.

“Hi!”

I turned to see Annabeth coming toward me, a hand out.

“Wanna wrastle?” she said jokingly with a thick hillbilly accent.

I liked her already. “Sure, why not” I said chuckling.

Coach Saunders yelled over the chatter, “let’s take turns on offense and defense, like this.” She had Molly lay on her stomach, and Jody straddle her over her back to demonstrate the starting position for this round.

Annabeth did her best to take the awkwardness out of the situation. “Come on,” she said, “I’ll sit on you first.”

After a couple go rounds, coach reminded us to take breaks and get water when we needed to.

Annabeth and I grabbed our water bottles at the side of the mats.

“So,” she said, “you wrestled in middle school, then?”

“Well,” I said, “not on the school team. Just on a club team, my family was big into it.”

“Why’d you stop?” she asked as we watched the other three pairs.

Why did I stop? That was a good question.

“I liked it,” I said, which was the truth. “Partially, it got awkward wrestling boys.”

“Well,” Annabeth said, “you’re in luck!” She put her bottle back on her bag. “Now lay down so I can pin you.”
Annabeth was good, better than Molly. This was a hell of a workout.
