“New partners!” Coach Saunders shouted again.

Annabeth gave me a genuine hug before turning to find someone new to play with.

The only other girl my size was Paige. I walked over to her before I was stuck with a huge size mismatch.

“Hello, Paige, right?” I asked. “I’m Karli.”

“Nice to meet you,” Paige responded in a, high squeaky voice.

Coach instructed us to work on ‘a little bit of everything.’

Paige was tiny even by my standard. Maybe barely 5’ tall and almost certainly less than 100 pounds soaking wet. But, she was a sophomore and was on last year’s team and had some talent. We got into some more advanced stuff by the end of our session.

“Okay, time!” coach said, stopping the four pairs of girls. “That’s enough for today, I think. Back to work on Monday after school gets out. Four to six every day.” Legally, that was probably as much as she could get away with.

The girls said goodbye to each other, many clearly good friends. I overheard Jazz and Jody making plans for the night, and honestly was a little jealous.

“See you Monday, Karli,” Molly said as I walked out.
“Oh sure, see you,” I said, careful to not promise anything.
